Old fashioned and cute. The ending was like sugar cotton, but ok, it's Mark Twain. I didn't have any expectations, since I hated Huckleberry and Sawyer when I was a kid, and I never read anything else from him. Read full review

Pahina 178 - Here's a sigh to those who love me, And a smile to those who hate ; And whatever sky's above me, Here's a heart for every fate. Though the ocean roar around me, Yet it still shall bear me on ; Though a desert should surround me, It hath springs that may be won.
Pahina 66 - CANDIDE," written to refute the system of Optimism, which it has accomplished with brilliant success, is wonderfully similar in its plan and conduct to Johnson's " RASSELAS ; " insomuch, that I have heard Johnson say, that if they had not been published so closely one after the other that there was not time for imitation,1 it would have been in vain to deny that the scheme of that which came latest was taken from the other.
Pahina 179 - A LIFE on the ocean wave, A home on the rolling deep, Where the scattered waters rave, And the winds their revels keep!
Pahina 265 - It is a witty, gay, poetical book, full of bright things and true things, the seer donning a jester's garb to preach in; and one may be sure, under the shrug and the smile, of the keen dart aimed at pride, prejudice, self-seeking, injustice, and the praise for whatsoever is beautiful and good."— Hartford Courant.
Pahina 271 - embodies his researches up to the present time. It is divided into two parts, the first being a record of experiments with monkeys and other animals, and the second part a treatise on the theory of speech. The work is written so as to bring the subject within reach of the casual reader without impairing its scientific value.
Pahina 241 - IF I were required to guess off-hand, and without collusion with higher minds, what is the bottom cause of the amazing material and intellectual advancement of the last fifty years, I should guess that it was the modern-born and previously non-existent disposition on the part of men to believe that a new idea can have value.
Pahina 248 - Not one of these people got well; yet this obtuse hyena sets down every little gory detail of the several assassinations as complacently as if he imagined he was doing a useful and meritorious work in perpetuating the methods of his crimes. "Observations," indeed! They are confessions. According to this book, "the Ashes of an Ass's hoof mix'd with Woman's milk cures chilblains.
Pahina 267 - When Mr. Sharp leaves the North with its wild stories of love and fighting and death, and carries us away with him in the * Sospiri di Roma' to the warmth and the splendor of the South, he equally shows the creative faculty. He is a true lover of Earth with her soothing- touch and soft caress; he lies in her arms, he hears her whispered secret, and through the real discovers the spiritual."—-Philadelphia Record.
Pahina 264 - The style is simple and straightforward, with fine touches here and there. . . . The showing forth of the best aspects on both sides of the dreadful struggle is skilfully done, avoiding false sentiment, and maintaining an almost judicial tone, which does not, however, lessen the Interest of the story."— The Nation.
Pahina 271 - MILLER.
