SATURDAY EVENING.

"ABIDE with us, for it is towards evening, and the day is far spent."-LUKE xxiv. 29.

HYMN.

ABIDE with me! fast falls the eventide ;
The darkness thickens; Lord, with me abide :
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, Oh! abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away!
Change and decay in all around I see ;

O thou, who changest not, abide with me!

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with thy disciples, Lord;
Familiar, condescending, patient, free,
Come, not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come, not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea,
Come, Friend of sinners; thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me!

I need Thy presence, every passing hour,
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be ?
Through cloud and sunshine, Oh! abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows
flee,

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

PRAYER.

1 PETER II.

So

O ALMIGHTY GOD, who inhabitest eternity, and yet makest thine abode in the humble heart, come down and abide in our home, in our hearts, in our affections. abide in us, and enable us to abide in thee, that we may bring forth much fruit, and that thou mayest be glorified.

Teach us to lay aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies and envies, and all evil speakings, and, as new-born babes, to desire the sincere milk of thy Word, that we may grow thereby: Oh! may we taste and see that the Lord is gracious, and come unto Christ, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious. Oh! may he be precious to us, as to his believing people, chief among ten thousand, and altogether lovely.

Lord, we desire and seek to be a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, and to show forth the praises of him who hath called

us out of darkness into his marvellous light. As strangers and pilgrims, may we abstain from fleshly lusts that war against the soul; having our conversation honest in the world, that men beholding our good works, may glorify our Father who is in heaven.

Lord, teach us to submit ourselves to every ordinance of man, for thy sake; and by well-doing, to put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. While free, let us not use our liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but may we act as the servants of God, honouring all men, loving the brotherhood; fearing God, and honouring our Queen. Oh! may we follow in all things the example of Christ, who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth; may we, being dead unto sin, live unto righteousness, and be healed by his stripes. May we who were as sheep going astray, return to him as the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls.

Make us as members of his family, to live as heirs together of the grace of life, that our prayers be not hindered. Oh! thou that makest men to be of one mind in an house, make us all, united in heart to thee, to have compassion one of another, to love as brethren, to be pitiful, to be courteous: may thy grace enable us to refrain our tongues from evil, and our lips that they speak no guile; to eschew evil and to do good, to seek peace and to ensue it: to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts. Teach the younger among us to submit unto the elder, yea, all of us to be subject one to another and clothe us with humility; for thou resisteth the proud, but givest grace to the humble. O may we have grace to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt us in due time.

May we learn to cast all our care upon thee, for thou carest for thy people.

Oh! may we be sober and vigilant, remembering that our adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. Oh! beat down Satan under our feet, and strengthen us, that we may resist him stedfast in the faith.

And now, O thou God of all grace, shelter us beneath thy wing, make us perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle us. And to Thee, with the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be glory and dominion, for ever and ever. Amen. Our Father, &c.

A CHILD'S HYMN.

By cool Siloam's shady rill

How sweet the lily grows!

How sweet the breath beneath the hill
Of Sharon's dewy rose!

Lo! such the child whose early feet
The paths of peace have trod :
Whose secret heart, with influence sweet
Is upward drawn to God.

By cool Siloam's shady rill

The lily must decay,

The rose that blooms beneath the hill

Must shortly fade away.

And soon, too soon the wintry hour
Of man's maturer age,

Will shake the soul with sorrow's power
And stormy passion's rage.

O Thou, whose infant feet were found
Within thy Father's shrine,

Whose years, with changeless virtue crown'd,
Were all alike divine.

Dependent on thy bounteous breath,
We seek thy grace alone;

In childhood, manhood, age, and death,
To keep us still thine own.

A CHILD'S MORNING PRAYER.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, who dwellest in glory, and yet dost suffer little children to pray to thee, and praise thee, make my heart full of love, and full of praise to God, for all his goodness to me. Lord, make me thankful to thee, for sleep in the night, and health and every comfort this morning.

Oh! give me thy grace, to keep me from sinning against thee, this day and always. Make me hate every thing that God hates, and love what God loves. Give me thy Holy Spirit to teach me of my Saviour, and to lead me to him.

Watch over me this day, and keep me safe from all danger, for I am but a little child, and cannot help myself, and thou only, O God, canst make me to dwell safely. Bless my dear parents, and teach me
