The accounts from India are highly agreeable, and of great and decifive con fequence. A battle was fought on the 11th of September, laft between the British forces, and thofe of the Mahrattas, near Delhi, in which the Mahratta force was broken, with prodigious flaughter. The important fortrefs of Allyghur had furrendered to General Lake, on the 4th of the fame month. The Mahrattas again rallied after their defeat, retired ftill farther into their own territories, threw detachments into the fortrefes, and hoped to find their fecurity in withdrawing to a local fituation, into which a British army might not follow them without ruin. the army of Scindia was again routed with terrible carnage and complete difperfion. Proposals for a fufpenfion of hoftilities were fucceffively made from the Mahratta commanders. To these the British did not refuse to liften; yet ftill advanced in the purfuit. Before the Mahrattas could agree among themfelves to accept the conditions on which General Lake consented to grant them a truce, new rencounters and engagements enfued. At Baroarh, Agra, Delhi, Pewanghur, Parabutte, &c. the Briti have conquered in to many great victories, in which they fought with unequal numbers, but with the most ex. traordinary gallantry. On the aft of November, Scindia was attacked by General
