Court, in Norrington, county of Kent, by Charlotte, daughter and coheir of William Eggerton, L. L. D. prebendary of Canterbury, &c. As, in her earlier days, the was remarkable for her vivacity, good humour, love of fociety, and other amiable qualities, fo the fupported an excruciating illness of more than fifteen years, during fourteen of which the was confined to her room and bed, with a patience, refignation, and fortitude, almoft without a parallel. Through this long and calamitous period of fufferings, when her diffolution was almost daily expected, and even to be defired by her best friends, a peevish exprefiion was never heard to efcape her. To the laft, fhe was alive to the happiness of others; and the long expiring lamp of life, even in its fevereft struggles, never damped her benevolence towards her numerous relations and acquaintance, who fuperintended with undiminished folicitude her uncommon trials. On fuch a character, the luftre of descent can throw but a faint additional light; yet, in the fplendid origin of her mother, this lady might have found an ample fource of worldly pride; and it is certain that the Hammonds of St. Alban's have been, for almost three centuries, honourable by their alliances, refpectable for their rank, and even confecrated in the temple of British genius, by having produced in the Hammonds of Somer

fham, a younger branch, the father and grandfather of the celebrated elegiac poet.]

[Further particulars relative to the late J. Savage, efq. whose death was mentioned in our laft. He was a native of Bermuda, and bred a feaman, but while young fettled as a merchant in Charlestown, South Carolina, where, after many years of great induftry, he acquired a confiderable fortune. In the year 1775, from a defire to avoid witneffing the political ftruggle which was then ripening to a crifis, in North America, he came to this country, in which he has ever fince refided. Mr. Savage was a man of strong and found fenfe,' exemplary piety, primitive fimplicity of manners, great temperance, and unvarying cheerfulness,as likewife, of the most rigid integrity, and unbounded benevolence and charity. To his fuggeftion, was owing the restriction which is impofed on the British flave fhips, with refpect to the number of Negroes they tranf

port from Africa. Notwithstanding his

great age, his memory and other mental faculties were entire, and till within a few days of his death, he was capable of taking. a confiderable share of bodily exercife. Had it not, indeed, been for an acute disease, to which the young are liable as well as the old, what is termed by furgeons "an incarcerated hernia," it is probable that his life would have been extended to a much longer period.]

AT the annual meeting of the fchoolmafters affociation in the North of England, held at Newcastle, Tuesday, May 22, the capital of the fund was reported to be in a flourishing, progreffive ftate, notwithstanding they have now three fuperannuated members and eleven widows on their lift. This improved state of the fund arifes chiefly from the contributions of opulent individuals, who having themselves derived important advantages from a liberal education, are willing to difcharge a part of their obligations on this account, by affifting fuch as are engaged in communicating fimilar advantages to the rifing generation, to fecure a competent provifion for fickness and old age, and for their families after their decease, which the limited income arifing from their profeffional ftipends will not enable them to do.

Five additional dock fhares were lately fold by public auction, at the exchange in Hull, under the powers of a late act of parliament, obtained for the purpofe of making additional docks at that port. The first three shares brought the fum of 1500l. each, the fourth 1490l. and the fifth 15101.--that is, the fum of 1500l. upon an average. The above is a ftrong proof, among many others that might be adduced, of the high opinion entertained of the growing confequence and refources of the port of Hull, an opinion, which, in all likelihood, will ever be realized. The ten dock hares fold in March, 1303, produced the fum of 14541 upon an average. Only ten out of the thirty fhares which the dock company were empowered to create, now remain unfold.
