THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD IN THE LAND OF
THEIR INHERITANCE.

AFTER the death of Joshua, the children of Israel had no ruler over them in his place; the Lord - God was then their only ruler.

When the Lord brought forth His people from the hand of Pharaoh, He had made Moses to be ruler over them, that he might lead them to the promised land of Canaan, and teach them the law of the Lord their God, and the statutes and

ordinances which they were to observe. Moses led the children of Israel out of the land of their bondage; and for forty years in the wilderness he ruled them in God's name, and "showed them the way wherein they should walk, and the work that they should do." But when at the end of that long wandering, he had brought them to the borders of the promised land, he died. From the top of Mount Pisgah he looked upon the good land which the Lord had promised to His people, but he went not into it; for he had sinned against the Lord. Then the Lord made Joshua, the son of Nun, to be the leader of His people in the place of Moses, that he might bring them into the land of their inheritance, and lead them to subdue their enemies. So Joshua brought them in, and conquered all the land of Canaan; for the Lord was with him, and the Lord fought for Israel. And when the Lord had given them rest from all their enemies round about, and the land had been divided for a possession among their tribes, Joshua also died, and was gathered to his fathers.
