"Faith which worketh by love." 1 FAITH is the polar star That guides the Christian's way, Directs his wanderings from afar To realms of endless day: It points the course, where'er he roam, Hung on the brow of heaven, The pledge of mercy given: It is the bright triumphal arch Through which the saints to glory march. 3 The faith that works by love, And purifies the heart, A foretaste of the joys above To mortals can impart : It bears us through this earthly strife, There is no union here of hearts 2 Beyond the flight of time, Beyond this vale of death, There surely is some blesséd clime Where life is not a breath,Nor life's affections transient fire, Whose sparks fly upward to expire. 3 There is a world above, Where parting is unknown, A whole eternity of love, Formed for the good alone; And faith beholds the dying here Translated to that happier sphere. 4 Thus star by star declines, Till all are passed away, As morning high and higher shines 450.
