Can any be the disciples of Christ, or true Christians, unless they love him supremely?

Applying this rule to yourself, to what conclusion do you come?

26 1r any one would be a disciple of Jesus, what must he do?

How should he follow Jesus?

Is the requirement applicable to Christians now? To such as followed him two rewards were promised. What were they?

Where will Jesus be?

Is it desirable for us to be with him?

With your present feelings, can you expect this reward?

What other place is spoken of as the abode of some?-Matt. 25: 46.

GENERAL QUESTION.

Can you give some account of persons who

have lost their lives for their love of Jesus?

LESSON III.

Jesus converses with his Disciples concerning his Decease.

CH. xii. 27-36.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The people therefore that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered. Others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast

out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 (This he said, signifying what death he should die.)

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a

little while is the light with you. Walk 1 while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These thin s spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

To what place did Jesus come? — V. 12.
How did the people receive him?

What effect did this excitement among the peo-
ple produce on the Pharisees?

What pagans came up to Jerusalem at this feast?

About what was Jesus conversing with his disciples?

What direction did Jesus give to those who would serve him?

27 THE scene of his suffering was on the mind of Jesus. What did he say?

What does this language indicate?

But was he unwilling to endure the suffering? How did he indicate that he was not? - Luke 22:42.

You see Jesus was willing to endure any degree of suffering that God might be glorified. Ought all to feel thus?

Do you possess such a spirit?

Why did Jesus die?- Rom. 5:9, 10. 28 WHAT object was dearer to Jesus than life? You perceive, by the preceding verses, what Jesus endured in feeling, yet how deliberately he resolved to die: for whom was it that he died? -1 Tim. 1:15.

Then what was heard?

What words did the voice utter?

The life of Jesus honored God. How had God
honored Jesus?— Chap. 11 : 41 and 5 : 20 — 23.
How did God honor Christ after the resurrection?
Acts 1:9, 10, 11.

How will Jesus hereafter be honored? - Rev. 7:
9, 10.

29 DID those standing around Jesus hear the voice?

There were two opinions about it. What were they?

What is related somewhat similar to this in Acts 9:3-9?

Anciently God made his will known to men by a voice from heaven: how do we ascertain his will?

If men will not believe this word, would they though one should be sent from heaven?

Can you repeat Luke 16:31?

Do you regard this written word as though you heard it spoken from heaven?

30 THE people were astonished: what did Jesus say to them?

Was Jesus ignorant of what would hereafter take place, or not?

Can you repeat chap. 6:64?

31 WHAT did Jesus intimate was at hand in reference to this world?

Does the world here mean all creatures, or those wicked men who opposed Jesus?

What is said in James 4:4?

What does Jesus say of the Prince of this world?

Who is here meant?

What power has Satan in the world?

What effect had the preaching of the gospel, when proclaimed among the ancient pagans, and such as were under the dominion of the Wicked One? - Rev. 2: 13.

Can you tell, then, how Satan was cast out? 32, 33 JESUS alludes to the manner of his death: how?

What did he say would be the result of his crucifixion?

Can you repeat a prophecy on this point? - Isa. 53:11.

Did

How did Jesus give them to understand that all nations should be benefited by his death? Did the Jews expect this of the Messiah? they believe Christ to be the Messiah? 34 WHO spoke in reply to what Jesus had said? What did they say?

From what portions of the Old Testament did they draw this objection? - Ps. 110:4. Job 19:25-27. Dan. 7: 13.

· Is there in this really a promise that he should not be crucified?

How will these declarations be verified?

What other prophecies speak of his death?.
Isa. 53:8-10.

About whom did they inquire?

35 JESUS -endeavors to direct their attention to himself and his teaching. What does he call himself? - Chap. 8: 12.

What does he call his disciples? - Matt. 5:14.
What exhortation does he address to them?
What warning did he utter?

What consequences will come upon us if we
neglect to improve our privileges?

36 How does he here urge them to profit by his teaching?

What would they be, if faithful in improving their
privileges?

What is said of such as love sin?-- Chap. 3:20.
If not children of light, what are we?

How can we decide whether we are children of
light or children of darkness?-Chap. 8: 12.
Thes. 5:5, 6.

Now to which class do you think you belong? Will it be safe or right for any of us to continue in darkness for another week?

GENERAL QUESTION.

Can you give some account of the warning_addressed to the seven churches in Asia? - Rev. chap. 2 and 3.

LESSON IV.

Jesus repeats a Prophecy concerning the Jews, and again declares himself a Savior.

CH. xii. 37-50.

37 T But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfillel, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42 Nevertheless, among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Jesus cried, and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but

on him that sent me :

45 And he that seeth me, seeth him that

sent me.

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

How did Jesus feel in looking forward to his suffering?

What did he call himself?

What had his teaching and works clearly proved him to be?

37 DID his miracles or teaching produce faith in the people?

Had he performed many mighty works before

them?
