WHAT Voice had been heard? - Chap. 12:28. By what comparison did Jesus represent himself as a teacher? - V. 46.

Whose message did he deliver?

1 JOHN, in this and following chapters, gives some of the private teachings of Jesus.

To whom were these instructions addressed?
Just before what festival was this?

What approaching event gave very special interest to this occasion over other feasts which Jesus had celebrated with his disciples?

What feelings did he cherish toward his disciples? The time was now at hand when he must suffer the anguish of crucifixion: did this occupy his mind more than the welfare of his disciples did?

2 THE supper of which John speaks was the paschal supper, eaten the evening before the feast of unleavened bread: can you repeat Lev. 23:5, 6?

What individual is named ?

What evil thoughts were in his heart?
Who suggested the deed to him?

What ought Judas to have done? - James 4:7.
3 DID Jesus know the designs of Judas?
What is said of the power of Jesus?
After his death, where would he go?

Then did the design of Judas disturb him? 4 WHAT did Jesus do?* The form of the garment which Jesus wore was somewhat like our cloaks. Would it be convenient to wear a cloak in what he was about to do?

What else did he do?

Was he now dressed like a master, or a servant? 5 AFTER this, what servile work did he perform?

* See Ripley's Notes on this passage.

Was this service common at that time in that country?

Can you give an instance of it? - 1 Sam. 25:41. Was the position of persons at the table then as it is among us now?

6 WHOSE name is mentioned first?

Peter was astonished: what did he say?

What feelings did Peter cherish toward Jesus? - Chap. 21: 15, 16, 17.

Who of us can properly adopt this language? 7 WHAT reply did Jesus make to Peter? What promise did he give him?

What should this teach us in regard to the acts of Divine Providence, which we cannot understand?

Is it probable we shall know hereafter many things which now we do not understand?

8 THEN what did Peter say?

Was this an indication of rashness?

On what other occasion did the same trait of character show itself in this disciple? — Matt. 26:72.

How did Jesus reply to Peter?

Can we safely disregard any of the commands of Jesus?

What alone can cleanse from sin?-Heb. 9:14. 9 DID Peter see his error?

What did he say?

Did this language show a complete submission to the wisdom of Jesus, or not?

He desired entire cleansing. Can you repeat a portion of the words of David?- Ps. 139: 23. Repeat also Ps. 51:7 and 10.

What prayer did Paul offer for his brother? 1 Thes. 5:23.

10 JESUS had a particular purpose in what he was about to do. What did he say to Peter?

When persons come out of a bath, and step

on the ground, they will soil their feet. What then will they need?

Had the disciples and Peter been cleansed from sin?

But were they perfect?

What prayer did Jesus offer for such? — Chap. 17:15, 16, 17.

Would the grace of humility make them more perfect?

Do you think that we possess enough of this
grace?

Why did Jesus say they were not all clean?
To whom did he refer?

11. HAD he known that Judas would do this base act? Can you see any good reason why he should tell his disciples of this before it took place?

What does this prove?

Is he acquainted with our thoughts?

Do you think they are generally such as please him?

Will we not all try this week to govern our thoughts?

GENERAL QUESTION.

What are some of the most striking incidents in the life of Judas?

LESSON VII.

The same Subject continued.

CH. xiii. 12-20.

12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

13 Ye call me Master, and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

15 For I have given you an example, that ve should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The

servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is set greater than he that sent him.

17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

18 I speak not of you all; I know whom I have chosen; but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me.

19 Now I tell you before it come, that when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiv eth him that sent me.

At what festival did Jesus sit with his disciples?

On what subject did he give them instruction? Who among the disciples entertained designs of evil?

Were these designs known to Jesus?

By what act did he teach them a lesson of humility?

12 AFTER Jesus had replaced his robe, what did he say?

Did he refer to the act, or the lesson taught by the act?

What was the act? What was the lesson taught? Jesus desired his disciples to reflect on what he had done: should not we do the same in regard to the providence of God?

13 WHAT had the disciples called Jesus? Was this pleasing to him? Why?

What did Jesus promise Peter? — V. 7. How was he now about performing this promise? 14 IF he, their Master, had performed such an act for their benefit, what should they do?

How ought we to feel in regard to performing any act to benefit a fellow-creature?

15 WHAT does Jesus say to his disciples?

This act was to show them an example of the humility which would be required of them. Does he mean they should perform this act, or possess the spirit which was evinced by the act? Did Jesus enjoin this lesson at any other time? Matt. 18: 45, and 23:10, 11.

Some have understood this as the institution

of a religious ordinance: do you so understand it?

In what books of the New Testament would you expect to find an account of its observance, if it were a religious ordinance? Why?

16 WHAT is the argument by which Jesus enforces the reasonableness of this command?

By whom were the apostles sent forth to preach the gospel?

What was the command given them?

28: 19, 20.

Matt.

How can we prove that we are truly his disciples? 17 IF the disciples knew the things which Jesus taught, was any thing more necessary? What is that?

What is said of such as know the will of God, and neglect to do it? - Luke 12:47.

Does Jesus teach that humility will make men happy or unhappy?

Are we generally disposed to be humble?

18 DID Jesus know the true character of all his disciples?

What did he say to impress this on their minds?
Did he know this when he chose them as dis-
ciples ?

Then did he choose Judas as an heir of heaven?
What would be accomplished by him?

Was he free from guilt because he fulfilled the
scripture?

What instance can you repeat in which men were charged with wickedness, though they fulfilled what had been predicted? — Acts 2: 23. 19 WHAT reason does Jesus assign for telling them these things beforehand?

Would his disciples have had the same reason for confiding in him if he had not known the character of Judas?

If he had not told them before it took place that
