Had Jesus treated them as servants or friends?
16 WHO loved first, Jesus, or his disciples?
Is the same true in regard to all his people?
When did his love begin? - Matt. 25:34.
For what purpose had he chosen them?

In whose name are all our requests to be made?
How do you esteem the privilege of prayer?
Do you habitually avail yourself of it?

[blocks in formation]

Will you tell me some of the principal incidents in the history of Abraham?

LESSON XVIII.

Jesus continues his Conversation with his Disciples.

CH. XV. 17-27.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

WHAT had Jesus told his disciples was the highest proof of love among men?

Why was his love stronger than that?

With whom did the love originate which existed between Jesus and his disciples?

17 WHAT precept does he give them in this verse? Had he enjoined the same thing before?

What do you infer from its repetition ?

18 How would the world regard the disciples of Jesus?

By what consideration did he encourage them in view of this?

Should they expect better treatment than Jesus had received?

19 If the disciples were governed by worldly motives and feelings, how would the world regard them?

What is it to be of the world? — Eph. 2:2.

What were the feelings of the world?

Why did they entertain such feelings?

20 WHAT did Jesus charge his disciples to remember?

Where had he said this? - Matt. 10:24, 25. Under what circumstances, and to whom, was this said?

Had the people persecuted Jesus?

What, then, must the disciples expect?

How did Jesus bear the persecution of wicked men?

In what manner ought we to treat those who persecute us?-Matt. 5:44.

21 Or what did Jesus warn them?

On whose account would they persecute the disciples?

For what reason?

22 HAD those who opposed Jesus or his apostles

any excuse for such conduct?

Did the fact that they heard his teachings, increase or diminish their guilt?

Which are the more guilty, children who igno

rantly do wrong, or those who disobey when they know what is right?

23 WHOм do those hate who reject Jesus?

Can you think of having such a charge brought against you?

Will not the sin of disobedience to God be increased in view of your many obligations to him?

24 WHAT, besides the doctrines which Jesus taught, added to their guilt?

Did his works prove that he possessed the authority which he claimed?

Had any other man performed such miracles as he performed?

What power did they plainly manifest?

Of what does he charge those who rejected him of being guilty?

Was there any sufficient cause for this? 25 WHAT prophecy is here referred to ? Where was this written? - Ps. 69: 4.

- V. 25.

26 WHAT promise did Jesus renew to his disciples? Of whom was the Comforter to testify?

How was this fulfilled?-Acts 2:1-21.

Does the same Spirit now sustain and direct
Christians?

27 WHAT was the chief business of the apostles?
Why were they selected for this purpose?
How did they obey this injunction? Acts 2:22

In this verse what fact is noticed which should give us confidence in the statements of the evangelists?

GENERAL QUESTION.

In this lesson something is said of the sufferings of the disciples of Jesus: what instances can you name, and who were the sufferers?

LESSON XIX.

Jesus continues his Discourse with his Disciples.

CH. xvi. 1-11.

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 But these things have I told you, that, when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away: for ifI go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 Of sin, because they believe not on

me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Or what had Jesus warned his disciples? What did he say for their encouragement? 1 FOR what had Jesus said these things?

How was what he had said adapted to prevent their forsaking his cause?

Does his word afford encouragement to those who are now his followers? How?

2 WHAT did he tell them men should do to them? Did his disciples probably suppose they should thus expose themselves when they first began to follow Jesus?

Whose approbation would men think they secured when they did these things?

Would that excuse the act? Why not?

3 WHAT did Jesus assign as the reason why the world would do these things?

Of what did the Jews make their boast? - Chap. 8:41.

Do any at the present day suppose they serve God when they persecute others on account of their religious opinions?

4 WHAT did Jesus wish his disciples to remember? At what time should they remember these things? What influence do you think would the recollection of them have?

Had Jesus before given them instructions of these things?

5 WHERE did he tell them he was about to go? How did he encourage them to inquire more about this?

Would you be disposed to question the Savior if you had opportunity?

What question would you propose?

What important inquiry did a young man once make of him? - Mark 10:17.

6 How did the disciples feel?

What was the occasion of such feelings? If the disciples had understood what God designed to accomplish by the death of Jesus and their sufferings, would they have felt less or more sorrowful? Why?

7 WHAT did Jesus tell his disciples about his going away?

Why was it best for him to leave them?

What did he promise them?

If Jesus had not died, would there have been any gospel?

Then would the Spirit have been sent, or not? 8 WHAT is the work of the Spirit?

In relation to what subjects does he convince men? Why will they not consider these things without the Spirit?-Chap. 3:20.

Have you never been conscious of his influence? 9 WHAT is the chief sin of which the Spirit convinces sinners?

Are there any means of salvation except by Jesus Christ? Acts 4:12.

Who has provided this salvation? - Chap. 3:16. Will you state the reasons why rejecting Jesus is an infinitely great sin?
