lives Spread now Thy wing over us, so shall no harm happen to us.

Remember all for whom we are bound to pray. Bless all the ministers of Thy Word. Water them abundantly with the dew of Thy blessing. Deliver them from the fear of man, from seeking the applause of men, and from preaching themselves, or any other thing, but only Christ Jesus the Lord. Pardon our schisms, divisions, and want of brotherly love. Heal the breaches of Thy people; build the walls of Thy Church, and so strengthen them, that the gates of hell may not prevail. Pity the sick and afflicted, relieve the destitute; be the Father of the fatherless, and the God of the widow; and do for us, and for all for whom we pray, more than we can ask or think, for our Lord and Saviour's sake. To whom, with Thyself and the Holy Spirit, be equal and everlasting praise. Amen.

SHORT PRAYERS

TO BE ADDED ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

CHRISTMAS DAY. 1886.

BLESSING, and honour, and glory, and power be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever. O Lord God of our salvation, Thou hast remembered us in our low estate, out of Thy mercy that endureth for ever. Thou hast raised up a great salvation, and a mighty deliverance for us, to heal the sinful, to help the miserable, and to save that which was lost. We bless and magnify Thee for the designs of Thy love, and the counsels of Thy wisdom, that God should be manifested in the flesh, to destroy the works of the devil; and that the eternally beloved of Thy soul

should be made the son of man, to make us the children of God.

O Lord our God, who hast laid help upon One that is mighty, and found a ransom for us, help us to entertain and welcome the joyful news. Prepare us for the blessed Saviour; that He who came into the world in the fulness of time, may come into our souls with the fulness of His grace, and with all the blessings and consolations of His coming.

O blessed Saviour, be Thou an effectual Saviour unto us, and so save us from our sins, that Thou mayest also save us from the wrath to come. So redeem us here from all iniquity, that hereafter Thou mayest redeem us from everlasting misery. And for all the great things which Thou hast so graciously done for us, unto Thee, O blessed God our Saviour, in the unity of the ever-glorious Trinity, be all thanks and praise and honour and glory rendered by us and all Thy Church, now and for evermore.

GOOD FRIDAY.

O LORD JESUS CHRIST, who wast begotten of the Father before all worlds, very God of very God; who wast conceived by the Holy Ghost, and in the fulness of time born of the Virgin Mary; who being obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, hast delivered us by Thy holy and precious blood; and having destroyed the power of death hast opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers; we earnestly beseech Thee, O Lord our God, who sittest at the right hand of the Father Almighty, that of Thine infinite mercy, and through Thy cross and passion, Thou wilt redeem us miserable sinners, who are worthy of death, from all our sins and iniquities; and deliver us from all evils, past, present, and to come, and mortify in us all evil affections, both of body and soul. Raise us up with Thee, we beseech Thee, by Thy glorious power, that we desiring and

seeking after those things which are above, may attain to the glory of everlasting felicity, through Thy infinite mercy, O Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, the Creator of all things, who, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, livest and reignest in the unity of the Godhead, world without end. Amen.
