well-beloved Son, who gave Himself a ransom for our sins, and made atonement by His precious blood for the transgressions of all them that repent and believe in Him who rose again for our justification, and ascended up into heaven, where He now sitteth at Thy right hand, making intercession for us from whence also we look for His return, to receive us unto everlasting glory; there to remain, world without end.

For these Thy bounteous gifts, and for all the benefits which Thou daily bestowest upon us, we most humbly thank Thee, O merciful Father, beseeching Thee that Thou wilt give us grace through Thy Holy Spirit, to walk worthy of this Thy kindness; and so to live in this world according to Thy holy will, that at the last Thou mayest receive us to Thy glory, for our Lord Jesus Christ's sake.

Thy Word, O Lord, is a lamp unto our feet, and a light to our path. Thy statutes are right, and rejoice the heart; Thy commandment is pure, giving light to the eyes. down Thy Holy Spirit upon all pastors and teachers, that they may declare the glorious Gospel of Thy dear Son; and to all Thy

people give Thy heavenly grace, that they may diligently keep in memory whatsoever shall be godly and truly spoken. And forasmuch as neither he that planteth nor he that watereth is anything, but Thou, O God, who givest the increase, we earnestly pray that the seed of Thy blessed Word, which shall be sown among us, may fall into our hearts as into good ground; and be neither choked with thorns, nor dried up for want of moisture, nor carried away by the birds of the air; but, through the working of the Holy Ghost, may so take root in our hearts, that it may bring forth good fruit, to Thy praise and glory, and to the health of our souls, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRIMERS OF HENRY VIII. AND EDWARD VI., CALVIN, BRADFORD, ETC.

SUNDAY MORNING.

O MOST MERCIFUL FATHER, who by the mouth of our Saviour Jesus Christ hast said, Ask and it shall be given you; receive, we beseech Thee, our supplication, and for Thy truth's sake hear us in Thy righteousness. For we make our prayers unto Thee, most blessed Father, not trusting in our own righteousness, but in Thy manifold mercies. Have mercy upon us Thy sinful children; soften our hard hearts with

the dew of Thy grace. Fulfil Thy promise made unto us by Thy prophet. Take away from us this stony heart, and give us a heart

of flesh; put a new spirit within us, and make us to walk after Thy command

ments.

Con

Lighten, O Father of light, our blind hearts, blinded with error and ignorance, wrong judgment and evil affections. Lighten them with the true light of Thy holy Word, that we may know Thy will, love it, and live thereafter. Convert our impenitent hearts, which cannot repent of themselves. vert them through Thine almighty power, which Thou showedst in Christ Jesus Thy Son, in raising Him, as on this day, from the dead. Give us grace, blessed Father, to feel in our hearts Thine infinite goodness and mercy, and Thine exceeding kindness set forth unto us in and by our Saviour Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast given up to death, to redeem us from everlasting death, and to make us Thy children and heirs, brethren and inheritors together with Thine only Son our Lord.

Grant, O blessed Father, that we, being mindful of this Thine exceeding kindness, may condemn our ungratefulness; our sin and wretchedness, and hate and abhor it in our

G

hearts as we ought to do. Grant that we may cease from it, leave and resist it, and withstand in time of temptation. Grant that with unfeigned faith, and with sure belief in Thy promises, we may ask and obtain of Thee forgiveness, with grace to amend our lives. Grant that we may be thankful for the great benefits which we have received, and daily receive, of Thee, and may praise and love Thee evermore. Grant that loving Thee we may also love Thy holy commandments; and give us grace to see the beauty of holiness contained in them; and stir up in us an earnest desire to keep and observe them.

Grant unto us Thy continual aid, that we be not weary of well-doing; but forgetting those things that are behind, and ever looking forward, we may go on and increase in every good work unto our lives' end. And when it shall be Thy pleasure to take us out of this evil world, vouchsafe to give us possession of that kingdom which Thou hast prepared for us; there to be safe from temptation; and never more to offend Thy goodness; but to rejoice in Thee, and evermore
