SAYING OF CONFUCIUS.

TIME maintains a threefold stride;

Lingering, the future draweth nigh us,

Darts the present quickly by us, Motionless doth aye the past abide.

No impatience is availing

To impel when he delays;

No reluctance, or bewailing,

When he flies, his passage stays;

Stops he? By no spell e'er spoken

Shall his awful rest be broken.

Wouldst thou, on life's journey wending,

Bring it to a happy ending?

With the Lingerer counsel take;

Trust him not to do or make :

Do not as thy friend the Fleet one know,

Nor the Motionless as foe.

SCHILLER.-Spruch des Confucius.

RARITIES.

(FREE.)

"TIS said we may expect

Among us, soon, a band

Of worthies more select

Than ever graced the land:

Just see if they're at hand, Jack ;

Just see if they're at hand.

A parson who in nought

Of pelf, or pleasure, dreams;

Who makes the poor his thought,

And is the saint he seems.

Just see if he's at hand, Jack;
Just see if he's at hand.

A righteous judge who reads
The law that he lays down,

And e'en when beauty pleads

Reveres his ermined gown. Just see if he's at hand, Jack;

Just see if he's at hand.

A husband and his wife

Whom mutual vows inthrall;

He loves her more than life,

And is her all-in-all.

Just see if they're at hand, Jack;

Just see if they're at hand.

A critic all unstung

By spite; a barrister

Who sometimes holds his tongue;

A fair financier.

Just see if they're at hand, Jack;

Just see if they're at hand.

A don who, sans pretence,

To be polite is wont;

Some heirs who save their pence ;

Some millionaires who don't.

Just see if they're at hand, Jack ;

Just see if they're at hand.
