And on thy tongue keep watch and ward;

Soon may an evil word be said

O God, it was not evil meant !

And yet thy friend has grieved and fled.

O love while love is nigh at hand!

O love while love and life are brave!

The hour may come, the hour may come

For thee to mourn beside the grave.

Then kneelest thou upon the sward,

And hid'st thine eyes-on him, alas,

No more to gaze-thy weeping eyes

Deep in the long, dank, churchyard grass,

Saying: O look on me again,

Beside thy grave in anguish bent! Forgive me that I gave thee pain—

O God, it was not evil meant ! '

He sees not, hears not, draws not nigh,
Around thy neck his arms to throw ;

The loving lips do not reply:

'Hush, I forgave thee long ago!'

Ay, he forgave thee long ago,

Yet many a bitter tear he shed

For thee, and for thine evil word—

But peace, he slumbers with the dead!

O love while love is nigh at hand!

O love while love and life are brave!

The hour may come, the hour may come
For thee to mourn beside the grave.

The wavelets glance and smile;

And angles, and whistles the while.

Far down the cheerful valley,

In tiny. forms combine

Gay gardens, and merrymakers,

And woods, and meadows, and kine.

[blocks in formation]

He is playing with his rifle,

That gleams with the sun o'erhead;

He shoulders and presents it—

I wish he would shoot me dead.

HEINE.-Mein Herz, mein Herz ist traurig.

THE EYE-IMAGE.

In lovely woman's face

No risk I once detected;

I never tired to trace

My image in the rays

Her starry eyes reflected.

How well the likeness shows

Upon that mirror darkling!

The silken eyelash throws

A shadow of repose,

And moderates the sparkling.

And yet to every man

I give this honest warning:
