POLISH WAR-SONG.

[It may be right to mention that, from my ignorance of the Polish language, I am unable to judge of the fidelity of this version, though I have no reason to doubt it. I can only say that, in the autumn of 1854, I heard the original sung pretty often by a party of Polish volunteers, then on their way to join Sadik Pasha's ' brigade in the Crimea; that one of the gallant vocalists was good enough to let me write down, from his dictation, what he assured me was a literal translation; and that I have followed it closely. The air, which is given from memory, is as simple as the song ; but I shall not soon forget the effect produced by a score of manly voices chiming in, as the last couplet of each verse was repeated in chorus.]
