words, in order to deliver him to the power and authority of the governor.

21. Then they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly, and respectest not persons, but teachest the way of God truly; 22. Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Ce

sar or not.

23. But he perceiving their craftiness, said to them, Why tempt ye me? 24. Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answered, Cesar's. 25. Then he said to them, Render, therefore, to Cesar the things which are Cesar's, and to God the things which are God's.

26. So they could not catch at his words before the people: but they wondered at his answer, and were silent.

27. Then came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and asked him, (See Matth. xxii. 23.) 28. Saying, Master, Moses wrote to us, If a man having a wife, die without children, let his brother take his wife, and raise up seed unto him. 29. There were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, but died without children. 30. The second also married her, and he died childless. 31. And the third took her also; and in like manner the seven, who all died without children. 32. Last of all the woman died also. 33. Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife is she? for seven had her to wife.

34. But Jesus said to them, The people of this world marry, and are given in marriage; 35. But they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that (happy) world, and the (blessed) resurrection from the dead, will neither marry nor be given in marriage; 36. Nor can they die any more, for they are like the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection, (Rom. viii. 33. immortally and completely; their adoption being perfected by the regeneration of their body). 37.

But that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. 38. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living; for all (his people) live to him, (having him for a complete, allsufficient good, being perfectly happy).

39. Then some scribes, said, Master, thou hast well spoken. 40. And after that they durst not ask him any further question.

41. Then he said to them, How say they that Christ is David's son? 42. For David himself saith in the book of Psalms (cx.) The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, 43. Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44. David, therefore, calleth him Lord, (as being the Messiah, the Son of God), how is he then his son? (as the Son of man).

45. Then, in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples, 46. Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the markets, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the chief places at feasts; 47. Who devour widows' livings, (for which they are trustees), and for a shew (of religion) make long prayers; they shall receive an heavier condemnation.

CHAP. XXI.

THE POOR WIDOW'S PRAISE.

Now Jesus beholding, saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2. He saw likewise a certain poor widow casting in two mites. 3. Then he said, I tell you truly, That this poor widow hath cast in more than they all; 4. For all these have out of their abundance cast into the offerings of God; but she of her penury cast in all her sub

stance.

5. ¶ Now as some spake how the temple was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, 6.

As to these things ye behold, the days will come wherein one stone shall not be left upon another, all being thrown down, Matth. xxiv.

7. Then they asked him, Master, when shall these things be? and what will be the sign of their coming to pass?

s. Then he said, Beware of being deceived; for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draws near; therefore, go not after them. 9. But when ye hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified; for these things must first be, but the end is not yet. 10. Then he said to them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11. Yea, great earthquakes shall be in many places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs from heaven (before the destruction of Jerusalem.) 12. But before all these they shall seize you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, and ye shall be brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. 13. And these shall_turn to you for a testimony (to the truth.) 14. Resolve therefore, in your hearts, not to premeditate what ye shall answer: 15. For I will give you eloquence and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

16. But ye shall be betrayed by parents, brethren, kindred, and friends; and some of you they shall cause to be killed. 17. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. 18. But not an hair of your head shall perish, (ye shall either suf fer no loss, or your losses shall be doubly repaid, like Job's, xlii.) 19. In your patience possess ye your souls.

20. But when ye see Jerusalem encompassed with armies, know then its desolation is near. Then let them who are in it go out, and let them who are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let not them who are in the countries enter into the city.

22. For these are the days of vengeance, that all things written may be fulfilled. 23. But wo to them who are pregnant, or that suckle in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. 24. For they shall fall by the sword, and be led away captive into all nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down by the Gentiles, till the times (for the calling) of all the Gentiles (and the conversion of the Jews) be fulfilled.

25. There shall be signs also in the sun, moon, and stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring (before the destruction of Jerusalem); 26. And men's hearts failing them for fear, and looking at those things coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken; (All the light, and power and glory of the Jewish city, and temple, and church and state shall be darkened, and shaken and fall; as those of all nations shall be at Christ's coming at last to judgment.) 27. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28. And when these things begin to take place, then look up, and lift up your heads, for your redemption draws nigh.

29. He spake also to them a parable, Behold the fig-tree, and all the trees; 30. When they shoot forth, ye see and know that summer is near. 31. So likewise when ye see these things take place, know ye that the kingdom of God draws near. 32. Verily I tell you, this generation shall not pass away till all (concerning the destruction of Jerusalem) be fulfilled. 33. Heaven and earth shall pass away; but my words shall not pass away.

34. But beware lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and that day come upon you unawares. 35. For as a snare (unawares)

it shall come on all that dwell on the whole land.

36. Watch ye, therefore, and pray continually, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall soon come, and to stand before the Son of man.

37. Now in the day he taught in the temple; and at night he went out and abode on the mount, called the mount of Olives.

38. And all the people came early in the morning to hear him in the temple.

CHAP. XXII.

THE JEWS CONSPIRE AGAINST CHRIST.

Now the feast of unleavened bread, called the passover, drew nigh. 2. And the chief priests and scribes sought how to kill him; but they feared the people.

3. Then entered Satan into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, being one of the twelve. 4. So he went, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how to betray him to them. 5. Then they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6. So he promised, and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the multitude's absence.

7. Then came the days of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8. So he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us to eat. 9. But they asked him, Where wilt thou have us to prepare it? 10. Then he said to them, Lo, when ye enter the city, there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. And say to the householder, The Master saith, Where is the guest-chamber, where I may eat the passover with my disciples?

12. Then he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

13. So they went, and found as he said to them; and made ready the passover.
