feedeth them; are not ye more excellent than they? 27. Which of you by anxiety can add one cubit to his stature?

28. And why are you too anxious for clothing? Consider how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labour nor spin; 29. And yet I tell you, That even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these. 30. Now if God so clothe the herb of the field, which to-day exists, and to-morrow is cast into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31. Therefore, be not too anxious, saying, What shall we eat, or drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed?

32. Tho' the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that ye need all these things: 33. But seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and they will all be added to you.

34. Therefore be not too anxious for the morrow; as it will have the care of its own things. Sufficient to the day is its own evil.

CHAP. VII.

CHRIST ENDETH HIS SERMON.

JUDGE not that ye be not judged:

2. For with what judgment ye judge ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3. And why regardest thou the smaller faults of others, but observest not thine own which are greater. 4. Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Let me pull the speck out of thine eye, when behold there is a splinter in thine own. 5. Thou hypocrite, first cast the splinter out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the speck out of thy brother's.

6. Cast not pearls before swine, lest they

trample upon them; nor give what is holy to dogs, lest they turn about and tear you. (So is it to give reproof and advice to the profane and scoffers.)

7. ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: 8. For whoever asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened, (James i. 5, 6, 7.) 9. For which of you, if his son ask bread, will give him a stone? 10. Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in heaven give good things to them that ask him? (Psalm lxvi. 18. c. v. 24.)

12. All things, therefore, whatever ye would have men to do to you, do ye so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

13. Enter in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many go in at it. 14. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few indeed find it.

15. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravining wolves. 16. Ye will know them by their fruits. Men gather not grapes of thorns, nor figs of thistles.

17. Thus every good tree bears good fruit; but a corrupt tree yields bad fruit. 18. A good tree cannot yield bad fruit, nor a corrupt tree good fruit. 19. Every tree that bears not good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20. Therefore by their fruits ye will know them.

21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doth the will of my heavenly Father.

22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? yea, in thy name cast out devils, and done many wonderful works? 23. But then I will say to them, I

never approved of you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24. Therefore I compare every one who hears these words of mine, and does them, to a wise man, who built his house on a rock; 25. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; but it fell not; for it was founded on a rock.

26. But whoever hears these my words, and does them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house on the sand; 27. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell; and its fall was great.

28. Now when Jesus finished these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine; 29. For he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes, (who appealed to the authority of their wise men.)

CHAP. VIII.

CHRIST CURES DISEASES.

WHEN he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

2. And, behold, a leper approaching, worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 3. Then Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean; and immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus saith to him, See thou tell no man; but go and shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.

4.

5. Now as Jesus entered Capernaum, a cen turion came to him, beseeching him, 6. Saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously afflicted. 7. Then Jesus saith to him, I will come and heal him.

8. But the centurion replied, Lord, I am not

worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant shall be healed. 9. For thus I having authority over soldiers under me, say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it, (and diseases are as much subject to thy word of command, as my servants are to mine). 10. When Jesus heard it, he wondered, saying to them that followed, Verily I tell you, I have not found so great faith, not even in Israel.

11. I tell you also, That many shall come from the east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven: 12. But the children of the kingdom, (the members of the church) shall be cast out into outer dark. ness; where shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13. Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go away; and as thou hast believed, so be it to thee. So his servant was healed the same hour.

14. Moreover, Jesus came into Peter's house, and saw his wife's mother lying sick of a fever.

15. Then touching her hand, the fever left her; so she arose and waited on them.

16. And the evening being come, many possessed with devils, were brought to him; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick; 17. That what Isaiah the prophet said, (liii. 4.) might be fulfilled, he bore or took away our infirmities, and carried our sorrows, removing our diseases, (as our physician.)

18. Now, Jesus seeing great multitudes about him, commanded to depart to the other side.

19. Then a certain scribe coming to him, said, Master, I will follow thee wherever thou goest. 20. But Jesus replied, The foxes have holes, and the fowls of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. (Heb. ii. 16.)

21. Another also of his disciples said to him, Lord, suffer me first to have my father buried. 22. But Jesus saith to him, Follow me; and let these that are (spiritually) dead, bury those that are (naturally), dead.

23. Now entering into a ship his disciples followed him. 24. And lo, a great tempest arose in the sea, so that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. 25. Then his disciples came, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us; we perish. 26. But he saith to them, Why are ye fearful? Ye of little faith. Then arising he rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27. But they wondered, saying, What kind of man is this, even the winds and the sea obey him!

28. And being come to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, so very furious that none could pass that way; 29. And they cried out, What hast thou to do with us, Jesus the Son of God? (the mediator between God and man, and Saviour of men) art thou come hither to torment us before the time? 30. Now there was a herd of many swine feeding far from them. 31. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. 32. Then he said to them, Go. And having come out, they went into them; and, lo, the whole herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. 33. Then their keepers fled, and going into the city, told every thing that happened to the possessed of the devils. 34. Then lo, the whole city came out to meet Jesus, (who had thus punished them for dealing in swine, contrary to the law); and seeing him, they besought him to depart from their borders.

CHAP. IX.

CHRIST CURES THE SICK.

THEN he entered into a ship, and passing over, he came into his own city.
