husbandry and the building of God. 10. Accord ing to the grace of God given to me, as a wise master-builder, I laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereon. 11. For no other foundation can any man lay than what is laid, even Je sus the Christ. 12. If any man build on this foun. dation, (excellent materials), as gold, silver, pre cious stones, (or baser stuffs, as) wood, (thatched) with hay and stubble, (or instead of the true faith and practice of the gospel, faith without works, en, thusiasm, or superstition, and heresy, or schism); 13. Every one's work shall be made manifest: for the day (of judgment) shall lay it open, because it shall be discovered by fire, (2 Pet. iii. 19.) yea, the fire shall try every man's work of what kind it is. 14. If any man's superstructure abide (the test) he shall receive a reward. 15. But if any man's work be burnt up, he will sustain the loss: yet (if he was sincere,) he himself shall be saved, though as one, when his house is on fire, and he passing thro' it, loseth all but his life.

16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, as the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17. If any one (by sin) defile the temple of God, him will God destroy: for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

18. Let none deceive himself: if any of you seem to be wise in this world, let him become a fool (in the world's opinion,) that he may become wise (to salvation). 19. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God; as it is written, He entang leth the wise in their own artifice. 20. And a gain, The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are vain. 21. Therefore let none glory in men; for all things are your's, (Rom. viii. 28. that is for your good); 22. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Peter, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;

And ye are Christ's, (for his glory); and Christ is God's, (for his glory.)

CHAP. IV.

HOW TO ACCOUNT OF MINISTERS.

LET a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2. Moreover, it is required that stewards be found faithful. 3. But with me it is a very small thing to be judged by you, or by man's judgment; yea, I (am not a) judge of mine own self. 4. For tho' I am not conscious to myself of any thing (bad;) yet I am not hereby justified; but he that judgeth me is the Lord (Jesus Christ, the just Judge). 5. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have the praise that is due to him from God.

6. Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above what is written, That none of you be puffed up for one (teacher) against another. 7. For who mak eth thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? Now, if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it?

8. Now ye are full, now ye are rich, (in your own opinion, with gifts and graces), and have even reigned as kings, without (being indebted to) us (for any thing:) and I wish you did (so) reign, that we might also reign with you, (partaking of the comfort thereof.) 9. For I think that God hath brought forth us the apostles last, as devoted to death: for we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men. 10. We are treated as fools, for Christ's sake; but ye are wise in Christ, 3 C

(by your refinements as ye think;) we are weak (thro' fear and trouble) but ye are strong (in your own confidence;) ye are (rich) and honourable, but we are (poor) and despised. 11. Even to this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are almost naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain abode: 12. And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it patiently; 13. Being defamed, we exhort (to impartial judgment;) we are treated like the very filth of the world, and the offscourings of all things to this day.

14. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons, I admonish you. 15. For tho' ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many spiritual fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you by the gospel. 16. Wherefore, I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

17. For this reason I sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who will bring to your remembrance my ways in Christ, as I teach every where in every church. 18. Now some are puffed up, as if I would not come (to face my opposers,) 19. But I will come to you soon, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech (only) of those that are puffed up, but the power (to work miracles.) 20. For the kingdom of God is not merely in word, but in power. 21. Whether do ye choose, that I should come to you with a rod (of reproof,) or in love; and in the spirit of meek

ness.

CHAP. V.

PAUL REPROVETH FOR SUNDRY SINS.

Ir is generally reported there is lewdness among you, and such lewdness (too,) as is not heard of (even) among the heathen, that a certain person should have his father's (divorced) wife. 2. And

yet ye are puffed up, ye should rather have lamented, that he who hath done this deed might be taken away from you. 3. For I verily, tho' absent in body, yet present in spirit, have already judged, as if I were present concerning him that hath so done; 4. That ye being assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I being present with you in spirit, by the power of our Lord Jesus, 5. Deliver ye such an one to Satan, (as Job ii. 7. to be tormented for a time by disease,) in order to the destruction of the (lusts of the) flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6. Your boasting is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole mass, (moral and natural diseases both infect). 7. Therefore, purge out the old leaven, that ye may become a new mass, as ye are (by profession) unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old (pagan) leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9. I wrote to you in a letter not to keep company with whoremongers, (a letter of introduction to Timothy, but not inspired); 10. Yet not altogether the whoremongers of this world, or the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters; for then indeed must ye go out of the world. 11. But I have now written to you not to keep company with any one that is called a brother if he be a whoremonger, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an oppressor; with such an one not to (converse, nor to) eat. 12. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within the church? 13. But them that are without (even the pagans) God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked

person.

CHAP. VI.

LAW WITH BRETHREN FORBIDDEN.

DARES any of you having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? 2. Know ye not that the saints shall judge the world (as assessors with Christ)? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters. 3. Know ye not that we shall judge the evil angels? how much more (should ye judge) things that pertain to this life?

4. If then ye have causes to judge relating to the affairs of this life, do ye set those pagans to determine them who are of no esteem at all in the church? 5. I speak this to your shame. What! is there not one intelligent person among you who may be able to decide the cause of a brother? 6. But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before unbelievers.

7. But even this is altogether a fault among you, that ye have contests with each other. Why do ye not rather endure wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 8. Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud even your brethren.

9. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind (as catamites), 10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor oppressors, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11. And such were some of you, (when pagans); but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

12. All things (indifferent, as meats) are lawful for me, but all things are not proper: all such things
