grace of Christ, to another gospel. 7. Which is not another; but there are some who trouble you, and would subvert the gospel of Christ. 8. But though we, or an angel from heaven should preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached, let him be accursed. 9. As we said already, so I now say again, If any man preach any other gospel to you than ye have received, let him be accursed. 10. For do I now approve myself to men or to God? the doctrine that I would here persuade, is it that of men or of God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men I should not be the servant of Christ.

11. But I declare to you, brethren, that the gospel which I preached is not from man. 12. For I neither received it from man, nor was taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13. For ye heard of my conversation in times past in the Jews' religion, that I exceedingly persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14. And made proficiency in the Jews' religion, above many my equals in age among mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15. But when it pleased God, who separated me (to this office) from my nativity, and called me by his grace, 16. To reveal his Son by me, that I might preach him among the heathen; I conferred not immediately with flesh and blood (i. e. any man); 17. Nor * went I up to Jerusalem to them who were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned to Damascus 18. Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19. But I saw no other of the apostles except James the Lord's kinsman.

20. Now the things which I write to you, behold, as in the presence of God, I speak not falsely.

21. Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; 22. And was not known by face to the churches of Christ in Judea.. 29. But they

heard only, that he who persecuted the church in times past, now preacheth the faith (of the gospel) which once he destroyed. 24. And they glorified God on my account.

CHAP. II.

OF PAUL'S CONVERSATION.

THEN, fourteen years after, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

2. And I went up by (the appointment of a) revelation, and communicated to them the gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of note lest I should run, or had run, in vain. 3. But not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised; 4. Because of false brethren unawares brought in, who entered privily to spy out our liberty in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage (to ceremonies). 5. To whom we yielded not by subjection, for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 6. But as to those who appeared to be considerable, whatever they were, it makes no difference as to me, God accepts no man's person, for they who were of note added nothing further to me. 7. But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcised was committed to me, as that of the circumcised was to Peter; 8. For he who wrought effectually in Peter for the apostleship of the circumcision, wrought effectually also in me for the Gentiles; 9. And when James, Peter, and John, who appeared to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the heathen, and they to the circumcised. 10. Only they would have us remember the poor; which I also was careful to do,

11. But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. 12. For before some (Jewish converts) came from James he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came, he separated himself, fearing those of the circumcision. 13. And the other Jews dissembled also with him; so that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. 14. But seeing they walked not uprightly, according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest in the Gentiles' manner, and not like the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as the Jews? 15. As we are Jews by nature, and not (idolatrous) sinners of the Gentiles, 16. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the (ritual) law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ; for we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law; for by them shall no man be justified. 17. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found to have been sinners, is Christ then the minister of sin? God forbid! 18. Now if I build again (the cere monies of) the law which I destroyed, I make my self a transgressor. 19. For I through the law of Christ am dead to the law of Moses, that I might live to God. 20. I am crucified with Christ (to the ritual law and sin, and the world's allurements); nevertheless, I live (a new and spiritual life,) yet not I (of myself) but Christ liveth in me (by his word and Spirit quickening me); and the life I now live in the flesh (in this mortal body) I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me so as to give himself (to die) for me. 21. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if justification come by the Mosaic law, then Christ is dead in vain.

CHAP. III.

BELIEVERS JUSTIFIED AND BLESSED.

O inconsiderate Galatians, who hath enchanted

you that you should not obey the truth (of the gospel) before whose eyes Jesus Christ crucified for you hath been evidently set forth (in the word and supper) among you. 2. This only would I learn of you, received ye the (gifts) of the Spirit by the works of the (ceremonial) law, or by the hearing of the faith, (or the gospel). 3. Are ye so inconsi derate? as you began in the Spirit (of the gospel), are ye now made perfect by the flesh, (the carnal ordinances of the ritual law)? 4. Have ye suffered so much (for the gospel's sake) in vain, if it be in vain?

5. He, therefore, who ministers to you (the gifts of the) Spirit, and works miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of (gospel) faith? 6. Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him för righteousness, 7. Know, therefore, that they who are of faith in Christ, are Abraham's children. 8. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before to Abraham, saying, In thee, (ver. 16.) shall all nations be blessed.

11. But

9. So they who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. 10. For whoever are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things written in the book of the law to do them. that no man is justified before God by the law, is evident; because, Those justified by faith shall live. 12. And the law is not of faith; but, The man that doeth the works of it shall live by them. 13. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree; 14. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we through faith in Christ, might receive the Spirit promised.

15. Brethren, I speak according to the manner

of men: even to a man's covenant, if it be confirmed, no man addeth or disannulleth. 16. But to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as many; but as one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17. But this I say, the covenant being confirmed before by God concerning Christ, the law, given four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, to make the promise void. 18. For if the inheritance (of the blessing) be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

19. What end then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed (Christ) should come to whom the promise was made: and it was delivered by angels into the hand of a mediator (Moses). 20. Now, a mediator is not the mediator of one party, but. God is one. 21. Is the law then against the promises of God? by no means: for if a law could have been given which could have (justified and) given life (to those who come short of it), verily justification would have been by the righteousness of the law. 22. But the scripture hath concluded all (both Jews and Gentiles) under sin, that the promise (of life) by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to all that believe (in him). 23. But before the faith (of the gospel) came, we were kept under the law, shut up (as prisoners) till the faith came afterwards to be revealed.

24. So that the law was our guide to Christ (during the childhood of the church, by teaching us our duty and the evil of neglecting it, and shewing us the atonement of Christ in a figure), that we might be justified by the gospel faith. 25. But now that faith is come, we are no longer under a guide. 26. For ye are the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27. For whoever have been baptized into
