ance will be ours (he will not rule over us). 39. So they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.

40. Therefore, when the Lord of the vineyard cometh, what will he do to those husbandmen? 41. They replied, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and let out his vineyard to other husbandmen (the Gentiles), who will render the fruits in their seasons.

42. Jesus saith to them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone (the Messiah) which the (Jewish) builders rejected, is become the head of the corner (to unite Jews and Gentiles in one church): this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes, (Psalm cxviii. 22.) 43. Therefore I tell you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a people bringing forth its fruits. 44. And whoever (stumbling thro' ignorance and unbelief) shall fall on this stone shall be broken (and perish); but on whomsoever (malicious persecutors and profligates, or wilful infidels or apostates) it shall fall, it will crush him to pieces.

45. Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived he spake of them. 46. But when wishing to apprehend him, they feared the multitude, because they reckoned him a prophet.

CHAP. XXII.

THE PARABLE OF THE MARRIAGE FEAST.

THEN Jesus spake to them again in parables, say. ing, 2. The kingdom of heaven is like to a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son (the union of the church to the Messiah). 3. And sent his servants (the prophets and the Baptist) to call them that were invited, to it, (to wit, the Jews), but they would not come.

4. Again, he sent other servants (the apostles), saying, Tell them who are invited, lo, I have pre

pared my dinner, mine oxen and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready, (the gospel feast is prepared, and all is finished by the Messiah's death); come to the marriage feast.

5. But they undervalued it, and some went away, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise. 6. And the rest shamefully treated his servants, and slew them.

7. Which the king hearing, he was angry; and sent his armies to destroy these murderers (the Jews), and burnt their city.

8. Then he said to his servants, The marriagefeast is ready, but they who were called, were not worthy. 9. Go, therefore, into the highways (among the heathens), and call as many as ye find to the marriage feast.

10. So those servants went into the highways, and called together all that they found, both bad and good: so the marriage feast was furnished with guests.

11. ¶ But as the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment, (being so careless as not to go into the king's wardrobe like the rest, to put on the king's livery; or had not faith and repentance, with robes of righteousness).

12. Then he said to him, Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having on a wedding-garment? but he was silent.

13. Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into a pit of outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14. For many are called but few chosen.

15. Then the Pharisees went, and consulted how to entangle him in his talk.

16. And sent out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any man; for thou regardest not the

persons of men. 17. Tell us, therefore, What thou thinkest, Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not?

18. But Jesus perceiving their maliciousness, said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19. Shew me the tribute-money. So they brought to him a penny. 20. Then he said to them, Whose image and superscription is this? 21. They say unto him, Cæsar's. Then he saith, Render, therefore, to Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's.

22. At hearing these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.

23. The same day came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, and asked him, 24. Saying, Master, Moses said, if a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his widow, and the first child shall be heir to his brother's name and inheritance.

25. Now there were with us seven brethren; the first married a wife and deceased, having no issue, and left his wife to his brother; 26. The second also did likewise, and the third, unto the seventh: 27. And last of all, the woman died also.

28. Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven, shall she be? for they all had her.

30. For at

29. Jesus replied to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels of God in hea

ven.

31. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob; God is not the God of the dead, but of the living; (an all-sufsufficient good to their complete persons, soul and body, eternally.)

33. Now the multitude hearing this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

34. But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together to him.

35. Then one of them who was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, saying, 36. Master, which is the greatest command in the law? 37. Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38. This is the first and great command. 39. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40. On these two commands hang all the law and the prophets.

41. The Pharisees being come together, Jesus asked them, 42. What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, David's son.

43. He replied to them, How then doth David by the Spirit call him Lord, saying, 44. Jehovah said to my Lord, (as the Son of God) Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool, Psalm cx. 45. If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? (as the Son of man.)

46. And no man was able to answer him a word; nor durst any man from that day, ask him any more questions.

CHAP. XXIII.

CHRIST ADMONISHETH THE PEOPLE.

THEN Jesus spake to the multitude, and to his disciples, saying,

2. The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses's seat: 3. Therefore, whatever they command you to observe, do it, but follow not their example; for they say, and do not. 4. For they bind heavy burdens, grievous to be borne, and cause them to be laid on other men's shoulders, but they themselves will not put one of their fingers to them; (they will not do what they command others to do; or do as they would be done to.)

5. But they do all their work to be seen of men; they make broad their phylacteries (scrolls of the law on their foreheads and arms) and enlarge the borders of their garments (thro' vanity and pride;) 6. And love the chief places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues. 7. And salutations in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8. But be not ye called Rabbi, (infallible guide); for one is your master, even Christ, and ye are all brethren. 9. And call no man your father (or rule of conscience) upon earth: for one is your Father, who is in heaven.

10. Neither be ye called Masters (or infallible guides), for one is your master, even Christ. 11. But let him who is greatest among you, be your servant 12. For whoever will exalt himself shall be abased, but he that will humble himself shall be exalted.

13. But wo to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men, (forbidding them to believe in Christ); for ye neither go in yourselves, nor suffer them that are entering to go in.

14. Wo to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows livings (whereof ye are trustees), and for a pretence of piety make long prayers; therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15. Wo to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye traverse sea and land to make one proselyte (to your religion), and when he is proselyted, ye make him twofold more (bitter against Christianity, and) the child of hell than yourselves. 16. Wo to you, ye blind guides, who say, if any swear by the temple, it is nothing; but if any swear by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath. 17. Ye fools, and blind! which is the greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18. And if any swear by the altar, it is nothing;
