13. And immediately Jesus gave them leave. So the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine; then the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and were drowned; they were about two thousand. (Thus Jesus punished them for dealing in swine contrary to the law).

14. Then their keepers fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. So they went out to see what was done. 15. And coming to Jesus, they see him that was possessed with the legion of devils, sitting clothed, and right in his mind; and they were afraid.

16. And they who saw it, told them how it befel him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. 17. And they began to .entreat him to depart from their coasts.

18. And coming into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil, desired to be with him. 19. Yet Jesus suffered him not, but said to him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, having had compassion on thee. 20. So he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men wondered.

21. And Jesus passing over by ship again to the other side, multitudes gathered to him, whilst he was by the sea.

22. And, lo! a ruler of the synagogue cometh, named Jairus; and, seeing him, he fell at his feet, 23. And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth ill at the point of death; I pray thee, come and heal her, that she may live. 24. So Jesus went with him; and a great multitude followed, and thronged him.

25. And a certain woman, having an issue of blood twelve years, 26. Who had suffered many things by many physicians, and spent all that she had, and was nothing better, but rather worse; 27. But hearing of Jesus, she came in the crowd behind, and

touched his garments: 28. For she said, If I may but touch his clothes, I shall be whole. 29. And straightway her fountain of blood was dried up; and she felt herself healed of that plague.

30. Then Jesus finding that virtue had gone out of him, turned about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31. Then his disciples said to him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

32. But he looked around to see her who had done this. 33. Then the woman sensible of her cure, fearing and trembling, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34. Then he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath healed thee, go in peace, and be freed of thy plague.

35. While he was speaking, some came from the ruler's house, who said, Thy daughter is dead; trouble the master no further.

36. But Jesus hearing what was spoken, saith to the ruler, Be not afraid, only believe.

87. Then he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, James, and John his brother. 38. So he cometh to the ruler of the synagogue's house, and seeth the bustle, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

39. And being come in, he saith to them, Why make ye this noise, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. 40. Then they derided him. But having put them all out, he, with them that were with him, and the father and mother of the damsel, entereth in where she was,

41. And took her by the hand, saying to her, Talitha-cumi; which is, being interpreted Damsel, arise. 42. Then straightway, she arose, and walked; for she was twelve years old. So they were astonished with a great amazement.

43. Then he charged them straitly to let no man. know it; and commanded to give her something to

eat.

CHAP. VI.

CHRIST DESPISED BY HIS COUNTRYMEN.

THEN he departed thence, and came to his own country, with his disciples.

2. And on the sabbath he taught in the synagogue: and many hearing him were amazed, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is given him, that even such mighty works are wrought by him? 3. Is not this the carpenter, Mary's son, the kinsman of James, Joses, Judah, and Simon; and are not his kinswomen here with us? so they were offended at him.

4. But Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his relations, and in his own house. 5. And he could do no mighty works there, except laying his hands on a few sick folk, he healed them. 6. He wondered at their unbelief. And he went around the villages, teaching.

7. Then he calleth to him the twelve, and sent them forth two and two, and gave them authority over unclean spirits; 8. Commanding them to take nothing for their journey, except a staff, no bag, nor bread, nor money in their purse: 9. But be shod with sandals; and not have on two coats.

10. He said also to them, In whatever place ye enter into a house, abide there till ye depart from that place.

11. And whoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet, for a testimony against them. Verily I tell you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

12. So they went out and preached repentance. 13. And cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many sick, and healed them.

14. Now king Herod heard of him; for his

fame was spread abroad, and he said, that John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works are done by him. 15. Some said, it is Elias; others said, it is a prophet, or one of the prophets.

16. But Herod hearing, said, It is John whom I beheaded: 17. For this Herod had seized John, and bound him in prison, for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. 18. For John said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 19. Therefore Herodias was enraged at him, and would have killed him; but could not. 20. For Herod reverenced John, knowing he was a righteous and holy man, but he kept him in prison, watching over him; and tho' he heard him peace ably, he was much perplexed. 21. But a conve nient time came, when Herod, on his birth-day, made a supper to his nobles, colonels, and chief men of Galilee; 22. Then the said Herodias' daughter came in and danced, and pleased Herod and his guests. 23. And the king sware to her, saying, Whatever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24. So she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she replied, John the Baptist's head.

25. Then she came in with haste to the king, and said, I desire thee to give me forthwith, in a plate, John the Baptist's head.

26. Now the king was much grieved, yet because of his oath and his guests, he would not reject her.

27. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded to bring his head. So he went and beheaded him in the prison; 28. And brought his head in a plate, and gave it to the damsel, who gave it to her mother.

29. And his disciples hearing it, came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

28,

30. Then the apostles came together, to Jesus, and. told him all things, both what they had taught and done.

31. Then he said to them, come ye privately into a desert place and rest a while: for many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32. So they departed into a desert place, by ship privately.

33. But the people saw them departing; and many knew him, and ran thither by land, out of all cities (around the lake) and outwent them, and came to him.

34. So Jesus going out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he taught them many things.

35. The day being now far spent, his disciples came to him and said, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; 36. Send them away, to go into the country around, into the villages, and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat. 37. He said, give ye them to eat, but they replied, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? 38. He saith to them, How may loaves have ye? go and see, And, when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

39. Then he commanded them all to sit down, by companies on the green grass. 40. So they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and fifties.

41. And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples, to set before them; also, the two fishes he divided among them all. 42. And they all ate and were filled. 43. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes (being much more than at first). 44. And they who ate of the loaves were five thousand men.

45.

Then immediately he constrained his dis
