For Herod a feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and b heard him gladly. * Or, kept him, or, saved him. a And the Scribes and Chief Priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him : for they feared him, because all the people were astonished at his doctrine, Mark xi. 18. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet, Matt. xiv. 5. But if we shall say, Of men ; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet, xxi. 26. gat his works; they waited not for his counsel, Psal. cvi. 12, 13. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not, Ezek. xxxiii. 32. He was a burning and a shining light; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light, John v. 35. VER. 21. And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida, Luke ix. 10. Καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας, ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, εὐλόγησε, καὶ κατέκλασε τοὺς ἄρτους· καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὑτοῦ ἵνα παραθῶσιν αὐτοῖς· καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἐμέρισε πᾶσι. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them ; and the two fishes divided he among them all. VER. 42. Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες, καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν. And they did all eat, and were filled. VER. 43. ται πρὸς αὐτοὺς, περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τῆς θα λάσσης· καὶ ἤθελε παρελθεῖν αὐτούς. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them a and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. a See on Matt. xiv. ver. 25-27. VER. 49. Οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν περιπατοῦντα ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης, ἔδοξαν φάντασμα εἶναι, καὶ ἀνέκραξαν. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out : VER. 50. (Πάντες γὰρ αὐτὸν εἶδον, καὶ ἐταράχθη σαν) Καὶ εὐθέως ἐλάλησε μετ ̓ αὐτῶν, καὶ Καὶ ἦραν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους λέγει αὐτοῖς· Θαρσεῖτε, ἐγώ εἰμί, μὴ πληρεῖς, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἰχθύων. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. φοβεῖσθε. For they all saw him, and were trou-" bled. And immediately he talked with 1 VER. 51. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition, ver. 7-9.
