he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? and he blessed him there, Gen. xxxii. 24-29. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD, 2 Kings iv. 33. Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast, Isa. xxvi. 20. Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee? John i. 48. VER. 7.

ὥσπερ οἱ ἐθνικοί· δοκοῦσι γὰρ ὅτι ἐν τῇ που Προσευχόμενοι δέ μὴ βαττολογήσητε, λυλογίᾳ αὑτῶν εἰσακουσθήσονται.

But when ye pray, a use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

a And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a

journey; or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came to pass when mid-day was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice

nor any to answer, nor any that regarded, 1 Kings xviii. 26-29. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God, Eccles. v. 2, 3. 7. But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice, about the space of two hours, cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians, Acts xix. 34.

O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not prosent our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name, Dan. ix. 18, 19. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words, Matt. xxvi. 39. 42. 44.

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for a your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth, xi. 2. Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 1 Tim. vi. 16. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I, saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever, v. 12-14.

VER. 10.

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, iv. 17. VER. 11.

Give us this day our daily bread. a But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, Matt. iv. 4.
