stoutest limbs must change their strength for weakness, the healthiest looks must alter like a fading flower, and the merriest heart must part with joy for sadness. Day after day, we see and hear of some of our fellow-creatures who drop into their graves like winter's falling leaves. In short, every thing serves to remind us of the truth of our Saviour's words, The night cometh when no man can work. My brethren, in our Saviour's words I would call upon you, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal, where nothing can be trusted and nothing long can last; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither rust nor moth doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal, where happiness awaits you, unchangeable and everlasting, with your Saviour and your God.

The night cometh when no man can work! Waste not then the day of life, too short will be its continuance, too soon will it be gone! Let the commandments of God be the rule and guide of your conduct;

the example of Jesus Christ your pattern; and seek, above all things, for His forgiveness and His love, by repentance and newness of life. Then when that night shall come upon you, that night of death, in which you can work no more, you will be able to lie down in your conscience will tell you work is done. If you shall have the comfort of feeling that you have made the best use, the best improvement of your time, you will have but little fear, through Jesus Christ, of entering into eternity. You will look forward without dread to that hour when the long night of death shall be broken through by the last trumpet's sound, when you shall wake to a new life, to the brightness and the glory of an everlasting day: when you shall meet all those whom you have most loved on earth, in peace and blessedness, which never shall be interrupted: when the Saviour who died upon the cross for you, shall lead you to the throne of God, to sing His praise with all the happy company of heaven when sickness and

sorrow shall have fled away, tears shall be wiped from every eye, and you shall enter into the joy of your Lord. That we, and all who are dear to us, may so prepare for the night that is coming, that we may hereafter find ourselves in such perfect happiness, God in His mercy grant, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour! Amen.

what place He came, giving, every now and then, the most astonishing proofs of His power, His authority, and His loving

kindness.

From a book in which every thing is wonderful and well deserving our attention, it is not an easy matter to choose any one part, and to say of it, this is fitting to be thought of and considered more than any other: for there is no part from which we may not find, if we carefully look for it, improvement to our souls; every chapter, every line, possesses treasures of the greatest value. The verses which I have taken for my text, require but a proper attention, and they cannot fail to increase our reverence and love towards that good and mighty Being who came down to save us from our sins.

The Holy Jesus had just been giving to His followers an astonishing proof of His great pity and compassion: He had found Himself in a desert lonely place, surrounded by great multitudes of people who had flocked together to hear the words of heavenly truth and wisdom,
