17. O Lord, why haft thou made us to err from thy ways! and hardned our heart from thy fear? Return for thy fervants sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

18. The people of thy holiness have poffeffed it but a little while: our adverfaries have troden down thy fanctuary.

9. And I will bring forth a feed out of Jacob, and out of Judab an inheritour of my mountains: and my elect shall inherit it, and my fervants fhall dwell there.

10, And Sharon fhall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have fought

8. Who bath heard fuch a thing? who hath feen fuch things? fball the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, fhe brought forth her chil

10. Rejoyce ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her rejoyce for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

11. That ye may fuck, and be fatisfied with the breasts of her confolations: that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

12. For thus faith the Lord, Behold, I willextend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then Shall ye fuck, ye shall be born upon her fides, and be dandled upon ber knees.

13. As one whom his mother comforteth, fo will comfort you: and ye fhall be comforted in Jerufalem.

14. And when ye fee this, your heart shall rejoyce, and

your

19. And I will fet afign among them, and I will fend thofe that escape of them, unto the nations, Tarfhish, Puland Lud that draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the ifles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have feen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

20. And they fball bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord, out of all nations, upon horfes and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon fwift beafts, to my holy mountain Jerufalem, faith the Lord; as the children of Ifrael bring an offe ring in a clean veffel into the house of the Lord."

JER. iij. 12-25.

12. Go, and proclaim thefe words toward the north, and say, Return thou backfliding Ifrael, faith the Lord, and I will not caufe mine anger to fall upon yon: for I am merciful, faith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.

13. Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou haft tranfgreffed against the Lord thy God, and haft fcattered thy ways to the ftrangers under ever green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, faith the Lord.

14. Turn, O backfliding children, faith the Lord, for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

15. And I will give you paftours according to mine heart, which fball feed you with knowledge and understanding.

16. And it fball come to pass when ye be multiplied and increafed in the land; in those days, faith the Lord, they fhall fay no more, The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither hall it come to mind, neither shall they remember it, neither shall they vifit it, neither shall it be done any more.

17. At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Ferusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

18. In those days the house of Judah fhall walk with the konfe

of Ifrael, and they shall come together out of the land of the north, to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

19. But I faid, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleafant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I faid, Thou shalt call me, My father, and shalt not turn away. from me.

20. Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband: fo have you dealt treacherously with me, O house of Ifrael, faith the

Lord.

21. Avoice was heard on the high places, weeping and fupplications of the children of Ifrael: for they have perverted their way and they have forgotten the Lord their God.

22. Return ye backfliding children, and I will heal your backflidings: behold we come unto thee, for thou art the Lord our God. 23. Truly in vain is falvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the falvation of Ifrael.

24. For fame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their fons and their daugh

25. We lie down in our fhame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have finned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.

CHAP. Xxiij. 3-S.

3. And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countreys whither I have driven them, and I will bring them again to their folds, and they shall be fruitful and increase.

HE wordthat came to Jeremiah from the Lord, faying, 2. Thus Speaketh the Lord God of Ifrael, faying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee, in a book

3. For lo, the days come, faith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Ifrael and Judah, faith the Lord, and I will cause them to return to the land I gave to their fathers, and they shall poffefs it.

4. And these are the words that the Lord spake concerning Ifrael, and concerning Judah.

5. For thus faith the Lord, We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.

6. Ask ye now, and fee whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I fee every man with his hands on his loyns, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into palenefs?

7. Alas! for that day is great, fo that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacobs trouble, but he shall be faved out of it.

8. For it fall come to pass in that day, faith the Lord of hofts, that I will break his yoke from off his neck, and will burst thy bonds, and Strangers fhall no more ferve themselves of him.

10. Therefore fear thou not, O my fervant Jacob, faith the Lord, neither be dismayed, O Ifrael: for lo, Iwill fave thee from afar, and thy feed from the land of their captivity, and Jacob shall return, and be in reft and quiet, and none shall make him afraid.

11. For I am with thee, faith the Lord, to fave thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in meaJure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

12. For thus faith the Lord, Thy bruife is incurable, and thy wound is grievous.

13. There

13. There is none to plead thy caufe, that thou mayeft be bound p: thou hast no healing medicines.

14. All thy lovers have forgotten thee: they seek thee not, for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chaftifement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy fins were increafed.

15. Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy forrow is incurable, for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy fins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.

16. Therefore all they that devour thee, shall be devoured, and all thine adverfaries, every one of them shall go into captivity: and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon theco will I give for aprey.

17. For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, faith the Lord, because they called thee an out-caft, faying, This is Zion, whom no man feeketh after.

18. Thus faith the Lord, Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacobs tents, and have mercy on his dwelling-places: and the city fhall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace fhall remain after the manner thereof,

19. And out of them fhall proceed thanksgiving, and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorifie them, and they shall not be small.

20. Their children alfo fhall be as aforetime, and their congregation fhall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them.

21. And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governour hall proceed from the midst of them, and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? faith the Lord.
