into Samaris, that Elisha said, these men, that they may see.

Lord, open the eyes of
And the Lord opened

their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.-2 Kings 6: 10 to 20.]

The Syrian king in warengaged,
And Dothans' city did invade;
The mighty God was dwelling there,
And heard Elisha's fervent prayer.

The prophet to his father cries,
Lord open now thy servant's eyes;
That he the army may behold,
Of heavenly guards that us enfold.

The Lord then heard the prophets prayer,
The servant knew that God was there;
And then he saw a heavenly band,
Of shining ones around them stand.

O, take from them their optic light,
That they cannot against us fight;
I'll lead them to Samaria's gate,
And they shall know that God is great.

Strong faith indeed the prophet had,
When he the Syrian armies led ;

Angelic hosts stood by his side,
Because in God he did confide.

The Syrian host Elisha led,
To Israel's king he boldly said,
Not one of these shall here be slain,
But safe shall they return again.

And now again Elisha cries,

Lord open now these Syrians' eyes;
That they thy power and might may see,
And learn to fear and trust in thee.

:

CHRISTMAS MUSE.

On Judea's plains the shepherds watch
Their fleecy flocks by night,
The bright winged seraphs fleeted by
And raised the beacon lights.

The star bespangled map was spread,
And bright the planets shined;
The clouds rolled back in rich festoons,
And made the scene sublime.

Lo! dulcet sounds the shepherds heard,
The eolian harp they cry;

A heavenly convoy quickly flew
Down from the upper sky.

Peace on earth, and good will to men,

The holy angels sung;

Glad tidings of great joy we bring
Burst from a thousand tongues.

The chosen minstrels struck their harps,
And sacred music roll'd;
Salvation to this earth we bring,

And boundless love unfold.

Behold he comes, the King of kings,
The Savior of mankind;
The Lord of hosts, eterna: God,
With attributes divine.

A MOTHER'S LEGACY TO HER
DAUGHTER.

This anniversary day I hail,
And in its pleasures share;

My thoughts roll back to years that's gone,
When you were free from care.

I see thee now as thou wert then,
All innocent and free;

I see thee toss thy ringlets back,
All in thy girlish glee.

I see thee still as thou wert then,
Parents alone to love;

Old time has plum'd his hasty wings--
Another shares thy love.

Thy childish days have sped their flight,
But halcyon days remain,
If blended love her banquet spreads,
True happiness you'll gain,

Accept a mother's legacy,

It's not a trifling sum;
the casket will unlock,
A treasure you have won.

If you

It's not bright pearls from ocean's bed,
Nor gems from mountains cleft,
Nor golden dust from rich Peru,
That I to you have left.

It is a key that will unlock

The emerald gates above,
Where sainted spirits long have sung
Jehovah's boundless love.

The jasper walls reflect their light,
Will you that light receive;

The Savior died that you might live
If
you his word believe.

THE HOMELESS.

The winter's storm my cottage shook,
The winds terrific yell'd;
The storm arose with giant strength,
The sleet it thickly fell.

A timid knock, a rustling sound,
A smothered sigh I hear;

Why have you wandered from your home,
What errand brings you here?

No home! no home! the wand'rer sighed,

I seek a shelter here;

O shield me from the fearful storm!

Then flowed the silent tear.

But where's your friends? I kindly said,
My friends, they most are poor;
My father died long, long ago,

I beg from door to door.

Ah! dry your tears, I then replied,
I'll be a friend to thee,

Your sufferings here will soon be o'er,
In heaven you soon will be.

To heaven she raised her sightless eyes,
Her grief she strove to hide;
She offered up a silent prayer,
In him she did confide.

I'll suffer, Lord, with patience here,
And kiss the chastning rod:
Too wise to err I know thou art,
Too just not to be good.

Immortal vision fills the soul
In that celestial clime;
Extatic joys will be my own,
No more will I repine.

THE SEASONS.

Behold the king of day appears,
Robed in his native power.
The sable cloud of night falls back,
Then fades the gloomy hour.
