Those shining orbs that blaze above,
Were formed by his Almighty will;
He built this beauteous world of ours,
And planted every stable hill.

Thou great Eternal Son of God,

Why didst thou visit man again;
The angels thou with folly charged,
Declared the heavens to be unclean.

Lo, in the dust we'll meekly lie,
And hate the paths of sinfulness;
We'll trust in Jesus Christ for strength,
And plead his blood-bought righteousness.

How dark and gloomy are our minds,
If far from God we stray,
And some known duty do neglect,
Or cease to watch and pray.

The way of the transgresser 's hard,
Why do we then delay ?

For death and judgment we must meet,
Then let us watch and pray.

Each darling sin must be removed,

Your idols thrown away,

Eternal life

you

then will eap,

If you will watch and pray.

Now turn your face to Zion's hill,
And scale the blissful way ;
Your joys they will perpetuate,
If you will watch and pray.

With confidence the Scriptures search,
Each sacred page survey,
And you in knowledge will increase,
If you will watch and pray,

His yoke is easy you will find,
His love he doth display,

His grace will make your burdens light,
If you will watch and pray.

His cross tho' heavy, I will bear,
And to the sinner say,

Repent, immortal soul repent!

And learn to watch and pray.

In heaven we'll wear a glorious crown,
That never fades away,

And palins of glorious victory bear,
If we but watch and pray.

THE GOODNESS OF GOD.

power and wisdom ever shine,
"Tis seen on every hand

He spreads creation far and wide,
The ocean and the land.

Creation on his shoulders stands,
He holds the vaulted sky;
Each planet moves at his behest,
And forked lightnings fly.

Each globe his wisdom ever tells,
His wisdom doth declare ;
The meanest insect leaps for joy,
And all his mercy share.

The earth is e'en replenished too,
By his benignant hand,

The cloudy cisterns he doth break,
And genial showers descend.

Behold the vast extended fields,
Exulting shout for joy;

The feather'd warblers join their notes,
And praise their tounges employ.

Is man more base than beasts or birds,
That he should now refuse,

To talk of all his mercies past,
And spread the joyful news.

Nor height, nor depth can ever span,
How rich his mercies grow;
Nor length, nor breadth can ever tell,
How wide his blessings flow.

With pity he is ever moved,
When he beholds our grief;
The arm of mercy he extends,
And soon he brings relief.

Thou art my Father and my God,
Thy wisdom who can know?
The depths of every heart thou seest,
And all the tears that flow.

MARY AT THE SEPULCHRE.

[The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalen, early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.-John 20: 1, 2. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him.-John 20: 14, 15.] ·

How faithful was Mary, her Saviour to seek,
Altho' he was absent she longed him to greet ;
On the blest Sabbath morning so early she rose,
Her Saviour was pleased himself to disclose.

She tho't that the grave would her Saviour retain,
Yet still she desired to see him again ;
Oh, what was the contrast,bright angels she found,
The guards lay as dead men upon the cold ground.

Now Mary was weeping with sorrow and pain, Lest she ne'er might behold her Redeemer again; Then Jesus inquired, now whom do you seek? And when she beheld him, with joy she did leap.

Then Mary was honored, the glad news to bear, And Peter he hastened the pleasure to share, But Thomas was doubting, he would not believe, He tho't that their rapture their hearts did deceive.

Like Mary, be faithful in serving the Lord,
And from your Redeemer receive your reward;
O do not be doubting, like Thomas of old,
Like Peter and Mary be fervent and bold.

If Mary had waited till light did appear,
She would have seen her Redeemer so near,
Or, if she thus doubting had tarried at home,
Do you think that her Saviour to her would have

come.

O let us be faithful in serving the Lord,

And we too, like Mary, shall have a reward;
In the morning while early, our tho'ts should arise,
And ascend to our Jesus who dwells in the skies.

THE VALE OF HUMILTIY.

Down in the lowly valley

My soul delights to go,

Where lillies hang their gentle heads,
'Tis there they sweetly grow.
