Luke iv. 13. Mar. i. Mat. iv. John i SE C T. XVIII. Jefus the Word, and John's Testimony I. IN 2. N the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God. The fame was in the 3. beginning with God; all things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made, that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light fhineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. 4. 5. 6. There was a man fent from God whofe 7. name was John. The fame came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that 3. all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was fent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every 9. man John i 10. 14. 15. Anno man that cometh into the world. He Wilderness. Etat. 30. was in the world, and the world was Minift. But as many as recei- 12. ved him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born 13. not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the word was made flesh, and dwelt amongst us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. John bare witnefs of him, and cried, faying, This was he of whom I fpake; He that cometh after me, is preferred before me; for he was before me. And of his fulness 16. have all we received, and grace for grace. For the Law was given by Mofes, but 17. grace and truth came by Jefus Chrift. No man hath feen God at any time; the 18. only begotten Son, which is in the bofom of the Father, he hath declared him. And this is the record of John, when the Jews fent Priefts and Levites from Jerufalem to ask him, who art thou? *And 15. Luk. iii, as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Chrift or not; * He 20. Then faid they un- 22. to him, who art thou? that we may 19. Minift. I. John i. 23. give an answer to them that fent us: Anno what fayeft thou of thy felf? He faid, I tar. 30. am the voice of one crying in the wildernefs, make ftraight the way of the Lord, 24. as faid the Prophet Efaias [xi. 3.] And they which were fent, were of the Pha25. rifees. And they asked him, and faid unto him, why baptizeft thou then, if thou be not that Chrift, nor Elias, neither Luke iii. 16. that Prophet? John answered, faying Mat. iii. 11. unto them all, I indeed baptize you with 11. 26. water unto repentance, * but there Mar. i. 8. ftandeth one among you whom ye know a * Mat. iii. * b * Mar. i. * Luke iii. 16. know John i. 26. 27. not He it is who coming after me is pre-Mat. iii. Ghoft and with fire, whofe fan is in his Mat. iii, hand, and he will throughly purge his 12. floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with 18. fire unquenchable. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. с C Bethabara.
