PREFATORY NOTE THE letters used in Cardinal Newman's Biography are, in most cases, printed from the transcriptions made by the Cardinal's literary executor the late Father William Neville, to whom the originals were sent by their owners for this purpose. In a few cases the originals, or the Cardinal's own transcriptions, have been placed at the disposal of the biographer. The Author desires to express his grateful thanks to Miss Mary Church and Mr. R. E. Froude, F.R.S., for their valuable aid and counsel in the revision of his work. He is also indebted to Dr. MacIntyre of Oscott, Monsignor Bidwell, and Father Bacchus of the Oratory, for suggestions made with the object of ensuring accuracy of expression where the biography touches on Cardinal Newman's theological views. Errata Since this work was in type, my attention has been called to two mistakes which occur in Newman's own correspondence. Dr. Gillies, referred to 156-7, was a Bishop, and not, as stated in the text, an Archbishop. His name is spelt by Newman as in the text. I believe it is more correctly spelt without the 'e.' The Bishop referred to in Newman's correspondence as the Bishop of Newry, and a colleague of Dr. Kenrick of Baltimore, was probably the Bishop of Dromore, whose cathedral town is Newry, and not, as is stated in the text (426) an 'American' Bishop. There is no such See in America. CONTENTS VI. THE ORATORIAN NOVICIATE (1847) VII. THE ENGLISH ORATORY (1848-1850) VIII. THE KING WILLIAM STREET Lectures (1850) IX.
