3 Whoever receives the life-giving word,
In Jesus believes, his God and his Lord,
In him a pure river of life shall arise,
Shall in the believer spring up to the skies.

4 My God and my Lord! thy call I obey;
My soul on thy word of promise I stay:
Thy kind invitation I gladly embrace;
I thirst for salvation, salvation by grace.
5 O hasten the hour! send down from above
The Spirit of power, of health, and of love;
Of filial fear, of knowledge and grace;
Of wisdom, of prayer, of joy, and of praise.
6 The Spirit of faith, of faith in thy blood,
Which saves us from wrath, and brings us
[sin,
Removes the huge mountain of indwelling
And opens a fountain that washes us clean.

Hymn 8. P. М.

faithfulness, Lord, each moment we
find,

So true to thy word, so loving and kind!
Thy mercy so tender to all the lost race,
The foulest offender may turn and find grace.

2 The mercy I feel, to others I shew;
I set to my seal that Jesus is true;
Ye all may find favour who come at his call;
O come to my Saviour: his grace is for all.

3 To save what was lost from heaven he came; Come, sinners, and trust in Jesus's name! He offers you pardon, he bids you be free! "If sin be your burden, O come unto me!"

40 let me commend my Saviour to you, The publican's friend, and advocate too; For you he is pleading his merit and death, With God interceding for sinners beneath. 5 Then let us submit his grace to receive, Fall down at his feet, and gladly believe; We all are forgiv'n for Jesus's sake, Our title to heaven his merit we make.

Hymn 9. P. M.

EARY souls that wander wide,
From the central point of bliss,

Turn to Jesus crucified,

Fly to those dear wounds of his:

Sink into the purple flood;
Rise into the life of God!

2 Find in Christ the way of peace,
Peace unspeakable, unknown!
By his pain he gives you ease,
Life by his expiring groan;
Rise exalted by his fall,
Find in Christ your all in all.
30 believe the record true,
God to you his Son hath given!
Ye may now be happy too:
Find on earth the life of heaven:
Live the life of heaven above,
All the life of glorious love.
4 This the universal bliss,

Bliss for every soul design'd:
God's orig'nal promise this,

God's great gift to all mankind.
Blest in Christ this moment be!
Blest to all eternity!

Hymn 10. C. М.

LOVERS of pleasure more than God,

For you he

pain,

Swearers, for you he spilt his blood;

And shall he bleed in vain?

2 Misers, his life for you he paid,
Your basest crimes he bore;
Drunkards, your sins on him were laid,
That you might sin no more.

3 The God of love, to earth he came,
That you might come to heaven:
Believe, believe in Jesu's name,
And all your sin's forgiven.

4 Believe in him who died for thee,
And sure as he hath died,
Thy debt is paid, thy soul is free,
And thou art justified.

[blocks in formation]

A WAKE, Jerusalem, awake,

No louger in thy sins lie down:
The garment of salvation take,
Thy beauty and thy strength put on.
2 Shake off the dust that blinds thy sight,
And hides the promise from thine eyes,
Arise, and struggle into light,

Thy great Deliverer calls, Arise!

3 Shake off the bands of sad despair,
Sion, assert thy liberty,
Look up, thy broken heart prepare,
And God shall set the captive free.

4 Vessels of mercy, sons of grace,
Be purg'd from every sinful stain,
Be like your Lord, his word embrace,
Nor bear his hallow'd name in vain..

5 The Lord shall in your front appear,
And lead the pompous triumph on;
His glory shall bring up the rear,
And perfect what his grace begun.

Hymn 12. P. М. FATHER of lights, from whom proceeds Whate'er thy ev'ry creature needs: Whose goodness providently nigh, Feeds the young ravens when they cry: To thee I look, my heart prepare; Suggest and hearken to my prayer. 2 Since, by thy light, myself I see Naked, and poor, and void of thee: Thine eyes must all my thoughts survey, Preventing what my lips would say: Thou seest my wants, for help they call, And ere I speak thou know'st them all. 3 Thou know'st the baseness of my mind, Wayward, and impotent, and blind; Thou know'st how unsubdued my will, Averse to good, and prone to ill; Thou know'st how wide my passions rove, Nor check'd by fear, nor charm'd by love.

4 Fain would I know as known by thee,
And feel the indigence I see;
Fain would I all my vileness own,
And deep beneath the burden groan!
Abhor the pride that lurks within,
Detest and loathe myself and sin.

5 Ah, give me, Lord, myself to feel,
My total misery reveal:
Ah, give me, Lord, (I still would say)
A heart to mourn, a heart to pray:
My bus'ness this, my only care,
My life, my every breath be prayer.

Hymn 13. S. M.

THAT I could repent!
O that I could believe!

Thou, by thy voice, the marble rent,
The rock in sunder cleave!
Thou, by thy two-edg'd sword,
My soul and spirit part;
Strike with the hammer of thy word,
And break my stubborn heart.

2 Saviour and Prince of peace,
The double grace bestow;
Unloose the bands of wickedness,
And let the captive go:
Grant me my sins to feel,
And then the load remove:-
Wound, and pour in, my wounds to heal,
The balm of pard'ning love.

For thine own mercy's sake,

The hindrance now remove;
