The deepest shades no more disguise,
Than the full blaze of day.

3 Whom thou dost guard, O King of kings,

No evil shall molest:

Under the shadow of thy wings
Shall they securely rest:

4 Thy angels shall around their beds
Their constant stations keep:
Thy faith and truth shall shield their heads,
For thou dost never sleep.

5 May we with calm and sweet repose,
And heavenly thoughts refresh'd,
Our eyelids with the morn unclose,
And bless thee, ever bless'd.

Hymn 302. C. М.

G

Morning.

IVER and Guardian of my sleep,
To praise thy name I wake:
Sill, Lord, thy helpless servant keep,
For thine own mercy's sake.

2 The blessing of another day
I thankfully receive:
only thee obey,

O may I only

And to thy glory live. 3 Vouchsafe to keep my soul from sin, Its cruel power suspend, Till all this strife and war within In perfect peace shall end. 4 Upon me lay thy mighty hand,

My words and thoughts restrain : Bow my whole soul to thy command, Nor let my faith be vain.

6 Pris'ner of hope, I wait the hour Which shall salvation bring;

When all I am shall own thy power,
And call my Jesus King.

Hymn 303. P. М.

WHEN quiet in my house I sit,

Thy book be my companion still:
My joy thy sayings to repeat,
Talk o'er the records of thy will:
And search the oracles divine,
Till every heart-felt word be mine.
2 O may the gracious words divine,
Subject of all my converse be;
So will the Lord his follower join,
And walk and talk himself with me:
So shall my heart his presence prove,
And burn with everlasting love.

3 Ost as I lay me down to rest,
O may the reconciling word
Sweetly compose my weary breast;
While on the bosom of my Lord
I sink in blissful dreams away,
And visions of eternal day!

4 Rising to sing my Saviour's praise,
Thee may I publish all day long;
And let thy precious word of grace
Flow from my heart and fill my tongue;

Fill all my life with purest love,
And join me to thy church above.

Hymn 304.

ONCE

Morning.

C. м.

more, my soul, the rising day

Salutes thy waking eyes;
Once more, my voice, thy tribute pay
To him that rules the skies.

2 Night unto night his name repeats,
The day renews the sound;
Wide as the heaven on which he sits,
To turn the seasons round.
3. 'Tis he supports my inortal fame,
My tongue shall speak his pralse;
My sins might rouse his wrath to flame,
But yet his wrath delays..
4- O God, let all my hours be thine,
Whilst I enjoy the light;
Then shall my sun in smiles deeline, -
And bring a pleasing night.

Hymn 305. С. М.

Evening..

TORD, thou wilt hear me when I

am for ever thine:

I fear before thee all the day,
Nor would I dare to sin.

2. And while I rest my weary head,
From cares and business freo,
'Tis sweet conversing on my bed
With my own heart and thee.
3 I pay this evening sacrifice;
And when my work is done,
Great God, my faith and hope relies
Upon thy grace alone.

4 Thus, with my thoughts compos'd to peace,

1

I'll give mine eyes to sleep;

Thy hand in safety keeps my days,
And will my slumbers keep.

Hymn 306. C. М.

Sabbath.

thou
in the morning thou shalt hear

[ocr errors]

To thee will I direct my prayer,

To thee lift up mine eye.

2 Up to the hills where Christ is gone,
To plead for all his saints,
Presenting at the Father's throne
Our songs and our complaints.
3 Thou art a God, before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand,
Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight,
Nor dwell at thy right hand.
4 O may thy Spirit guide my feet
In ways of righteousness!
Make every path of duty straight,
And plain before my face.
5. Now to thy house will I resort,
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thy holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

Hymn 307. L. M.

Morning.

10 LORD, how many are my foes

;

In this weak state of flesh and blood! My peace they daily discompose, But my defence and hope is God.

2 Tir'd with the burdens of the day, To thee I rais'd an evening cry; Thou heardst when I began to pray, And thine almighty help was nigh, 3 Supported by thy heavenly aid,

I laid me down and slept secure;
Death should not make my heart afraid,
Though I should wake or rise no more.

4 But God sustain'd me all the night;
Salvation doth to God belong:
He rais'd my head to see the light;
I'll make his praise my morning song.
Hymn 308. L. M.

1 Y God, how endless is thy love!

And morning mercies from above, Gently descend like early dew. 2 Thou spreadst the curtains of the night, Great Guardian of my sleeping hours; Thy sov'reign word restores the light; And quickens all my drowsy powers. 3 I yield myself to thy command; To thee devote my nights and days; Perpetual blessings from thy hand, Demand perpetual songs of praise.

BIRTH-DAY.

Hymn 309. P. M.

GOD of my life, to thee

My cheerful soul I raise;
Thy goodness bade me be,
And still prolongs my days;
