still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still and behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with Me to give every man according as his work shall be.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, that art the Root, and Offspring of David, the bright and morning Star; Thou, that art to come into the world, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

From Christmas to Ash Wednesday.

THEN THEN said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me; for whosoever will save his life, shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake, shall find it for what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, whose meat and drink it was to do the Will of Him that sent Thee, and to finish his work, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

From Ash-Wednesday to Passion Sunday.

THE foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his head.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, who for our sakes didst fast forty days and forty nights, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

JESUS wept.

Through Passion Week.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, who didst love thy friends, and freely offer Thyself to die for thine enemies, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

En Holy Week.

¶ On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

ESUS answered them, saying, The hour is come that the Son of Man should be glorified: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground

and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit: he that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, shall keep it unto life eternal.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, Who didst suffer for us, and endure such contradiction of sinners against Thyself, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

JESU

On Thursday.

ESUS answered them; Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, Who didst suffer for us thine agony and bloody sweat, when thy soul was exceeding sorrowful even unto death, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

JEST

On Good Friday.

[ESUS turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children for behold the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps that never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry.

O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, Who didst humble Thyself even to the death of the Cross for us miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and in the shadow of death; Who thine Ownself didst bare our sins in thy Body on the tree, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

BEHOLD

On Holy Saturday.

EHOLD He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him.

[blocks in formation]

On all Fast-days after Easter to Advent.

REPENT ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. O Christ, the King of glory; Thou, Who dost call upon men everywhere to repent, and turn unto Thee, have mercy upon us, and save us, and write thy Word in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

¶ Then immediately after the proper Text and Response, the Reader shall say,

none that come unto Thee, but lovingly receivest, cherishest, and restorest them, we call to thy memory that boundless love, whereby Thou didst offer Thyself on the Cross for us, and by the shedding of Thy precious Blood, didst pay the full price of our Redemption, and expiate the sin of the world.

for thine enemies, yea, sheddest thy Blood for thy very torturers; O make us, unworthy though we are, partakers of thy most holy Life and Passion; and so to drink into thy Spirit, that in our patience we may possess our souls, and never be overcome of evil, but overcome evil. with good. Hear us, O Lord, for thine own mercies' sake, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, One God, Blessed for ever. Amen.

Y that fulfilment of all BY righteousness wrought in thy most holy Life, and allatoning Death, we humbly pray Thee to forgive us all¶ our sins, and to hear all these our prayers. Lo, we cast our burden of guilt and infirmity wholly upon Thee. Receive us graciously, as Thou hast loved us freely. Grant us repentance unto life, and the full benefit of all those labours, griefs, and pains, which for us men, and for our salvation, Thou willingly tookest upon Thee, and sustained unto death, even the death of the Cross. Set us free, O Lord, we beseech Thee, from all the guilt, and penalty, and power of sin, that we may turn wholly unto Thee, to worship and to love Thee.

Let us pray.

GOD, our Saviour, who

savest our life from destruction, and crownest us with mercy and loving-kindness, so fill our hearts, we beseech Thee, with thy love and holy fear, that thy most Blessed Name be never more blasphemed through our sinful lives, but by the virtue and merit of thy Passion, and the power of thy Holy Spirit, give us true and abiding sorrow for our past sins, and strength to overcome present temptations,

thy holy ways, we may persevere in good works even unto the end; for unto Thee we desire to live, and in Thee to die.

Thee we commend our bodies and souls, all we are, and all we have. Direct and order all our thoughts, words, and works, according to thy good pleasure, to the praise of thy Name; and conform them to the perfect rule of thine own most holy Life and conversation. Thine we are, O Lord, and thine we desire to be in life and death. Into thy hands we commend ourselves, now and for evermore, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, One God, world without end. Amen. THE Blessing of God Al

mighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be upon us, and remain with us for ever. Amen.

Should the foregoing Office be too long for the use of any particular Family, the Master can appoint that the Psalm, Lesson, or Hymn, or all of them, should be omitted; and he can either say the Office, as it stands, without them; or proceed at once from the end of the first Lord's Prayer to the Invocation, O Blessed God, Father of mercies, &c. Or, to shorten it still further, he can omit all the latter part of the Office, saying the final Blessing immediately after the Collect for the Day, or after his own Intercessory Prayer, as is provided for in the Rubric.
