Zechariah; also, the twenty-fourth, forty-ninth, and sixtieth chapters of Isaiah, and from thence to the conclusion of his visions. Oh! could the men and women of this generation but realize their privilege that God, the Saviour, hath bestowed on them; and would, even now, at this late hour of the Gentile era, give him glory by acknowledging "the testimony* of Jesus," in ancient prophecy, with deep abasement and humble dedication to his holy will, I do believe that their souls would be refreshed beyond all the consolations that forgiveness of sins, acceptance with God, and evidence of their adoption hath ever administered in personal experience hitherto. It is the crown of piety; for it exalts the man of sorrows, it sustains the person of Jesus, it exhibits the reward of his sufferings, and glorifies his wonderful name, Emmanuel, that was announced with the prophecy of his birth. To all who receive the words of the Lord, and implicitly believe them, that they will be fulfilled in the person, acts, and offices of Jesus Christ, as Prophet, Priest, and King, upon this globe, it may be said that they have "set to their seal" "THAT GOD IS TRUE!!!”

And of unbelievers in this doctrine, it may be asked, "Is it a small thing for you to weary men; but will ye weary my God also?"

Suffer this word of exhortation:

"Heart ye, and give ear; be not proud, for the Lord hath spoken. Give glory to the Lord, your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains; and while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it GROSS DARKNESS!"

Suffer also this question:

* See Revelations, 19. 10.

Jer. 13. 15, 16.

What is the amount of denying to Scripture its literal meaning, where "thus saith God," "thus saith the Lord God," "thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, it shall come to pass," "I will do it," "I will perform it," are recorded by the scribes of the Holy Ghost, as the testimony of his mouth?*

One question more:

How did those unhappy Pharisees, who said, "this fellow doth not cast out devils but by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils," fall into the sin called "blasphemy against the Holy Ghost?"

I shall answer it, according to the understanding given to me.

By misplacing and rejecting the words of their prophets, that declared God's counsel, and holding to their own traditions.

Let us take warning!!! Prophecy is not a "cunningly devised fable!!!"

Now let me plainly tell you that where it is said in scripture, "the Lord hath chosen Jacob for himself," it means that he chose Jacob for himself, the younger son of Isaac, to whom he appeared in a vision, standing above a ladder, that was set upon earth, and the top of it reached to heaven, upon which the angels of God ascended and descended. And BEHOLD! the Lord stood ABOVE it, and said to Jacob, "I am [I AM] the Lord God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed, &c."

Where it is said, "and Israel for his peculiar treasure," it means that Israel is God's peculiar treasure, even the man Jacob, to whom God appeared a second time, and "buried him by baptism

* As I live, saith the Lord, is a solemn oath. Now look at Isaiah, 49. 18, and study the chapter. Gen. 28. 12, 15.

into death," that like as Christ rose from the dead, so [God decrees] that Israel should walk in newness of life.* Here is the election of God. "Thy name shall no more be called Jacob, (the supplanter,) but Israel, (a prince with God,) for as a prince hast thou power with God," &c. After this, when the person of the man is mentioned singly, he is still called Jacob; but when his family are introduced with him, he is styled Israel. Now do try, my Gentile brethren, to be willing that God should choose for himself, and as his election is decided by his own word in our ears, cease from proclaiming that “Gentiles are Israel." It is awful to rob God!

If Gentiles should say, we have had a glorious dispensation of the grace of God, for eighteen centuries past, in which we have been called the people of the living God, and been favoured with an opportunity to become children of Abraham by faith in Christ Jesus, I must accord my solemn amen to the testimony. I believe "they have been grafted

*Ezekiel 37. Romans 11.

It is the literal meaning of God's word that I contend for, as a part of the "faith once delivered to the saints," which is mangled in the church of Sardis at a most awful rate-that guilty church-(remember I do not allude to any particular sect among the Gentiles, but all professors who deny God's word) allows the literal meaning of God's word, where it suits her selfishness and pride. She consents to Jacob's exaltation unto Israel for a season; but afterward she assumes the preference, and very graciously consents that "the poor outcast Jews" shall be admitted to a state of equality with the Gentiles, if they will receive help through their ministry, and beautiful example, which they have set, in confessing the Saviour at his first coming to suffer; and denying the second to reign, except, indeed, it is, to reign through them by his Spirit, forgetting his words, "my glory will I not give to another;" "he shall come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

O! joyful day! Hail mighty King,

Let heaven's bright angels sweetly sing;
The trumpet sound proclaims the word!
This earth is thine, thou Christ and Lord!

into the good olive tree;" while the natural branches were cut off for unbelief; and that the fatness of the olive has been devoted to them for a grand space, that the "grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the communion of the Holy Spirit, hath been poured on Gentiles, for many generations, to bring them to glory." Yes! the descendants of Japhet have been enlarged; and Shem decreased.. Japhet hath dwelt in the tents of Shem, sure enough; spiritually or ecclesiastically, we know, and literally, I, with some others, believe. But to claim a perpetuation of our standing, beyond the times prescribed by the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and Jacob, is, criminally ungrateful, and very unjust. The word of the Lord is as express and as explicit respecting the cleansing of the Jewish sanctuary, and re-establishing the Jewish polity, and renewing the charter of Jerusalem, as it can be-language can declare it no plainer. These events are closely joined to the triumph of our blessed Redeemer, that gives it infinite weight; and we cannot pray "thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in Heaven," "with the spirit and understanding," without recognising their unison, and their fulfilment sealed in the word of God.

The declarations of Jesus Christ, that concern his glory, are as literal as they are spiritual, and as spiritual as they are literal. "What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder, remembering that "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft;" and that "it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Listen to the meek and lowly Lamb, addressing a warning and command to the Jews-Search the Scriptures;" for in them ye think ye have eternal life, is the reason, and because they testify of him.

Thus he magnifies his word-above all, his name; for, by his word, he reveals it as well as all his titles, except the incomprehensible one. If he had not spoken, nothing could have been written: if there had been no Revelation, we should be, it appears, but little superior to the beasts that perish. "To know God and Jesus Christ, is eternal life." "God hath spoken in his holiness." Psalm 60. 6. Read the Psalm: he says, I will divide Shechem, &c. &c. "Gilead is mine. Manasseh is mine. Ephraim also is the strength of mine head: Judah is my lawgiver -MOAB is my washpot," &c.

"Hear, O heavens! and give ear, O earth! for the Lord hath spoken!" What hath he said? "Seek ye, out of the book of the Lord, (the Scriptures of truth,) and read what he hath said." I do read, is your reply-I ask how? With your eyes closed on his glory; and your hearts veiled with prejudice against the doctrines of truth? If you read the Bible with prejudice against the testimony of Emmanuel's personal triumph upon earth, I tell you, they will indeed appear to you a dead letter, because "you turn judgment into gall." "The Scriptures cannot be broken." They are, 1, "spirit;" 2, "they are life." Jesus Christ, whom all the angels worship, calls every unbeliever in LITERAL prophecy "fools;" and he declares that ALL things that are written concerning him, shall be fulfilled."

I must soon close. A part of this testimony is in press. I am beyond my proposed limits, having something to say for the Indians. Yet I must add that Gentiles have not a moment to lose; for their dispensation is about to expire. Fly, quickly, to mercy's altar, and cry to the Lord to prepare you to meet the proceeds of his terrible day! "For verily I say unto you," (hear him describe the state our
