great hail." Look at the description of His coming to give the law. Ex. 19. 16. 18-20. Read Moses' prophecy of His glorious epiphany and second advent, Deut. 33. 2. also Habakuk 3. 2.—And now let us turn to the nineteenth chapter of the Apocalypse, and behold the last mad effort of the haughty Assyrian, and his fate.

Rev. 19. 11. And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true; and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.

Ver. 12. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written that no man knew but He Himself.

V. 13. And He was clothed in a vesture dipped in blood; and His name is called the Word of God. V. 14. And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

V. 15. And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations, &c.

V. 19. And I saw the Beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.

V. 20. And the Beast was taken, and with him the false prophet, that wrought miracles before him -(see Rev. 13. 11-15.) with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. THESE BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE.".

There is an end of the personal anti Christ. Now turn to the fourteenth chapter of Isaiah; and read the proverb of Zion against the deceiver, and last oppressor of GoD's chosen people.

"How art thou fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How art thou cast down to the ground
Which didst weaken the nations.

For thou hadst said in thy heart,

I will ascend into heaven,

I will exalt my throne above the stars of GOD.
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation-
In the sides of the north-

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds

I will be like the Most High

Yet thou art brought down to hell

To the sides of the pit.

They that see thee shall say-(when the Beast is taken)
Is this the man that made the earth to tremble,

That did shake kingdoms

That made the world as a wilderness

And destroyed the cities thereof," &c.—

Please read the whole chap., and do not stumble at the 21 v.-for anti Christ will have a terrible brood of vipers, whom he will call his children, and they all belong to the original and spiritual Lucifer, the father of lies, and maker of murder. Anti Christ's armies will exhibit sottish children, in whom is no faith, not even the faith of devils.

It may be asked, if the bottomless pit (out of which the Beast is to rise for his reign by the power of that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan) is literal or symbolical. On this point I only say, that I know of no particular Scripture reference to the locality of a bottomless pit, except the place where Korah and his company were buried alive; as it is written in the holy Torah, or Book of the Law, "And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their houses, (i. e. tents; see v. 26, Numbers 16 c.,) and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them." Num. 16. 32, 33. I should not dare to form any conclusion upon so obscure a passage of sacred prophecy.

"Secret things belong to God"-anti Christ will rise up somewhere within the compass of this terrestrial globe; and his "coming is after the working of satan, with all power and signs, and lying wonders"-to him satan will give his power, seat, and great authority; and the capitol of his vile kingdom is styled, "the seat of the Beast." I do not pretend to assign its location-there is no hint in Scripture to bear me out, much less a declaration. With regard to "a lake of fire and brimstone," (spoken of as the grave of anti Christ, and his magic working helper, the false prophet,) I shall remind you of the last verse in the thirtieth chapter of Isaiah.-"For Tophet is ordained of old: yea, for the king it is prepared: he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire, and much wood: the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it." This passage must be received literally, though encompassed by mystery. Tophet is prepared for the king spoken of in the fourteenth chapter, called there the king of Babylon. The Lord, speaking to this abominable character, by the prophet Nahum, says, "I will make thy grave; for thou art vile”but his "nobles shall dwell in the dust." His armies are slain by the sword of the Lord. See Zechariah, fourteenth chapter, twelfth and thirteenth verses. I shall offer one remark farther concerning Tophet. Dr. Clarke, or Butterworth, says, "it is thought that Tophet was the place of slaughter at Jerusalem, lying to the south of the city," (I should say rather to the west,) "in the valley of the children of Hinnom. And that a constant fire used to be kept there, for the carcasses and other filthiness that was brought thither from the city, on which account, perhaps, it is made a figure of hell." It seems the lake of fire into which anti Christ and his coadjutor, the false prophet, are cast, must be somewhat nigh to

Jerusalem; for the Lord says by Isaiah, (see 66. 23, 24,) "And it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me, for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh." This text is a key to the sixteenth verse of the fourteenth chapter; for anti Christ is the Beast of highest renown, after whom the whole world shall wonder, except they whose names are in the Lamb's Book of Life. Such a warrior never was, nor ever will be known, as the angel from the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. Both mean, A Destroyer. His first coming is under the sounding of the first woe trumpet. See Rev. 9 c. His ascent out of the bottomless pit, and appearance in the wilderness carrying Babylon on his back, is under the terrible blast of the sixth trumpet, and second woe. He is exhibited to John as the Beast once from the sea, that was-is not-and yet is. See Rev. 17. 3, 8, and The whole world are to wonder at this Beast, except they whose names are in the Lamb's Book of life. "Who is like him? Who is able to make war with him? I can answer this last question-The Lamb; when he comes as the Lion of Judah; and none but He can do it. By the breath of His mouth-i. e. at his word of command, the Beast shall be taken-By the Glory of his Epiphany, the Beast shall be destroyed; and all his infidel allies, the whole of his abominable armies— "the fury of the Lord shall be poured upon them all." Anti Christ is the abominable branch of Satan; and Christ is the Righteous Branch of David.

11 v.

Satan's envy is peculiarly set against His Kingdom, His person, His throne; therefore he gives his power to a wicked man, and the latter is satan's tool, dupe, and prey; for it is known to the old serpent, that his time is short upon earth, when he descends, "having great wrath," according to the testimony, which John heard by "a loud voice." See Rev. 12. 10-12. N. B. I believe that the Blessed Redeemer referred to this short time, (which satan will have upon earth,) when He declared that there should be great tribulation, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created, unto this time, neither shall be. Mark 13. 19. Matt. has it, "no-nor ever shall be." 24 c. 21 v. And the Lord JESUS calls that time, "the days of vengeance," Luke 21. 22, which He said were shortened, (that is, altered from the appointment "a day for a year,") on account of the elect; otherwise "no flesh should be saved." Of course, the sacred prophecies which concern the covenant and oath of God, even "the word which He commanded to a thousand generations," (Psalm 105. 9, 10,) could never be fulfilled; for those prophecies expressly, and repeatedly report, the literal restoration of Jacob's descendants, to the land of Canaan, in the latter day, when Job said that his Redeemer should stand upon the earth; and that man (whom the Lord called His servant,) who had spoken of Him "the thing that is right," (see 42 c. 7 v.) declared the resurrection of His body from the destruction of worms in the grave, saying, "in my flesh I shall see GoD: whom I shall see for myself," &c. chap. 19. 25-27. I understand Job, that he should have a sight of God, in his flesh, which is the mystery of Redemption; for he says, "whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another."
