Chap. 3.

II. The Second Argument is this. If the Queft18 Gospel and the Creed be always true, Christ has always upon the Earth, a Church, which is the Communion of Saints, which is One, Holy, Apoftolical, Univerfal, and Orthodox. If One, it is not in feparate and disagreeing Communions. If Holy; it is never guilty of teaching wicked, idolatrous, profane, and unreveal'd Doctrine. If Apoftolical; it has both its Paftors and its Faith (in an uninterrupted Succeffion, and within its own Communion) from the Apostles. If Univerfal; it is always in Being, always known, always visible. If Orthodox; it never mifleads us, either in the first or in the fecondary Articles of Religion, nor does it ftate the Terms of Communion wrong. Indeed how can the Communion of Saints do this? And is fhe not a fure Guide, if she cannot do it? Hence Catholicks say, that the Universal Church is INFALLIBLE, in deciding Controverfies of Religion. But by this INFALLIBILITY (as far as Faith is concerned in the Question) nothing else is meant, but only the perpetual Orthodoxy of the Universal Church. For the Infallibility of the Pope (which fome Catholicks affert, and others deny) is not any Article of the Catholick Religion.

III. If it can then be prov'd, that the Properties now mention'd, of the Catholick Church, agree to any other Society upon Earth, diftinct from the Church in Communion with the Bishop and See of Rome; that Society is the Catholick Church. But, if no fuch Society can be found, the Cafe is alter'd.
