LESSON XIV.

Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee and teaches the

People.

CH. vi. 15–27.

15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, 17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

18 And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.

19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

21 Then they willingly received him into the ship and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one where into his dis

ciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias, nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks ;)

24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. 25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? 26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27 Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

ON which side of the sea of Galilee did we leave Jesus last Sabbath?

What miracle had he performed there?

[ocr errors]

What feeling was it that caused Jesus to sup-
ply the wants of the multitude?

Do you possess that feeling for the needy?
Have you seen any children since the last Sab-
bath who needed food and could not obtain it?
How did this miracle affect the people?

15 WHAT did Jesus perceive?

What did he do?

For what purpose was he accustomed to retire from the multitude?- Matt. 14: 23.

Do you ever go away by yourself for this purpose?

Would not a king who could do such miracles be very desirable ?

Do you think there are many men who would be unwilling to be made a king?

16 WHERE did his disciples go at evening? What sea was this?-v. 2.

17 WHEN they came to the sea what did they do? Toward what place did they sail?

Was Jesus with the disciples when it had become quite dark ?

18 WAS the sea calm, or much agitated, that night? What caused the agitation?

Have you ever seen the sea when the wind blowed very hard?

They were in great danger; of whom did they probably think?

19 How many miles had they rowed when they saw Jesus?

How was he coming to them?

What did they suppose he was?

How did they feel?

How wide was this sea?

Can you

tell whether they were in a large ship,

or a boat?

20 WHAT did Jesus say to them?

Is God present with the ships on the great

ocean?

What is God called? - Ps. 62: 8.

Does he see you in every danger?

Can he protect you, and keep you from harm? 21 THEN What did the disciples do? What followed?

1

Shall we not always perform duty better, and endure all suffering more cheerfully, if we feel that Christ is present with us?

Do you, realize that he is present at all times?

When you do feel this, are you apt to be easily

angry, or often unkind ?

22 ON which side of the sea were the people here spoken of?

Was there any boat there, after the disciples left the night before?

Did Jesus go with his disciples ?

It appears the people were seeking for Jesus.
What facts did they know ?

23, 4. HAD any other boats come from Tiberias to the east side of the lake, after the disciples had gone away?

When the people saw that Jesus was not there what did they do?

What feeling did they manifest about this affair?

For what purpose did they come to Capernaum? Do you think, if the children of this school should know that Jesus was teaching the children of a school near us, they would wish to go and hear him?

every Sabbath?

Would they all obey his teaching?
Do you not hear his instructions
25 WHERE did they find Jesus?
What did they say?

26 WHAT was the answer Jesus gave?

Had these people any desire to hear and obey his instructions?

Then does it always show that people love the
truth when they take considerable pains to go
where it is preached?

Were they not selfish in following Jesus?
What does true religion require? — Matt. 16:

24.

What does taking up the cross mean?

27 FOR what should they not labor?

For what should they labor?

Which do you think the most important, food

for the body, or such a knowledge of God as will save the soul for ever?

Who can impart such knowledge?

In what book has he left such instructions?
To seal means to approve; how did God ap-
prove of Jesus? Acts 2: 22.

Do you suppose the children in this school think
more of the Bible than of their food?

Which would you prefer to lose, your dinner every Sabbath day, or your Sabbath school instruction?

Would not the former be to prefer the meat that perishes ?

LESSON XV.

Jesus declares Himself the Bread of Life.

CH. vi. 28

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

30 They said therefore unto him, What sign she west thou then, that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work?

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

[blocks in formation]

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never bunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

36 But I said unto you, that ye also have seen me, and believe not.

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.

How did Jesus come to his disciples while they were on the sea of Galilee ?

What did the people do when they saw he had left them?

For what did they follow him?

In the 27th v. what does he tell them ? 28 WHAT inquiry did the people then make? Do you think it important, that all should inquire what will please God?

What persons do you know who seem to make this inquiry?

29 WHAT did Jesus answer?

Whom did he mean by him that was sent ?
For what was he sent ?— Chap. 3:16.

What did Jesus require of those who believed
on him?- Matt. 16 24.

-

Then, is it the most pleasing thing to God that
any one can do, to become a Christian ?
What is necessary in order to be a Christian?
Chap. 3: 7.

[ocr errors]

Do you think you are one?

30 Now what did they ask of him?

What miracle had Jesus just performed? Should you think from their question that they saw him perform the miracle?

If they did, what does it show?

When God sent persons to be leaders and teachers, did he give them signs? -Ex. 9 : 23. Then was it not reasonable for them to expect Jesus would show some sign of his authority as a teacher ?

What sign from heaven had been given at his baptism? Matt. 3: 17.

[ocr errors]

31 WHAT did they say of their fathers?

Where have you an account of this? - Ex. 16:

15.

Was not the miracle of Jesus as great as this ?
Relate the circumstances.

Did the Jews acknowledge Moses as one sent
of God?
