torture itself with its own Ideas fo often, if it could get rid of them? If the Propofition above be true, as I apprehend it is, then the true Origin of our Ideas may be more than guess'd at.

ALL our Ideas are archetypal, or ectypal, i. e. they are Originals, firft Patterns of Things, or they are the Refemblances of thofe Originals, of those first Patterns; they must be the one or the other, for there can be no Clafs between. The first they cannot be; for as it is inconceivable how they fhould, fo I think it impoffible that an originated Being fhould be the true and proper Original of Ideas, or any Thing elfe. Nor can I conceive how the Mind can frame even the Refemblances of thofe Originals, thofe firit Patterns, until they be exhibited to us by fome fenfible Objects; then it may, for then thefe are the Pattern of them, Heb. ix. 23. The Mediums, the Inftruments to convey Intelligence to us by cur Senfes, and not by Abstraction.

AND if it be true, that our Understandings are Patients, and only recipients of Ideas, and not Agents forming them, it will neceffarily follow, that we are leaft of all capable of forming true Archetypal ones, for this Reafon too, becaufe Jehovah himfelf only can do that; he is the great Exemplar, in him only is the true Original of all Things; and all Things elfe are but Emanations from him, and ectypal Refemblances of him, whether they be fpiritual or material Things. Whofoever doubts of this, let him up, and try to form one pure orignal Idea; and, if his own Inability to do it, does not convince him, all I can fay will not. How these eternal Forms were stamped on the Creature, lies not before me now; and if it did, I could not fay one Word about it; but that they

were fo ftamp'd is plain, and that the World was in Idea before its actual Existence, appears from Gen. ii. 5. Creation is nothing elfe, but an external, fecondary Copy of this great Exemplar. What (or whofe) Understanding is fufficient to contemplate these prototypal Forms, as they are. in the Divine Mind, unlefs ftamp'd on the Creature, and revealed too, I know not? but fure I am, mine cannot ; for to me the invifible Things of God are seen by the Things that are made and revealed, Rom. i. 20. And by Faith I underftand, that the Things which are, were not made of Things which do appear. Heb. ix. 23, 24. God is fupernatural, and he only is fo; all Things elfe ftand in Nature, and are Parts of it, and not above it. Ideas of fpiritual Beings or Things, &c. must be taken from Nature, or we must have none of them; for he that has no Idea of Nature, has none of God. Nature is a Plan or Map, whereby we may know God, and the fpiritual World; but not without his Revelation, which is a Description or Explanation of the Plan, an Illuftration of fpiritual by natural Things; and I think four Fifths of the Bible were written for this Purpose, and the Tenour of the Whole justifies me in this; and for Proof I could multiply Quotations from the Old and New Teftament, but shall confine myself to a few, Exod. xxiv. 10. And they faw the Elahim of Ifrael, and under his Feet, as it were, a paved Work of Saphire Stone, and, as it were, the Body of Heaven in Clearness. 17.
