said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the ing which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them; but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

THE EPISTle.

Rom. xii. 1-5.

I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think;

but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in. one body, and all members have not the same office, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one, members one of another.

The Second Sunday after the Epiphany.

THE COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful God, we beseech thee to grant us thy grace, that in all the relations of life we may do justly, and love mercy, and walk humbly before thee; so that at last we may be received to the society of the just made perfect in thy heavenly kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GOSPEL.

John ii. 1-11.

AND the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of

Jesus was there; and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto And there were you, do it. set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants who drew the water knew) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and said unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee,

and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

THE EPISTLE.

Rom. xii. 6-16.

HAVING then gifts, differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy, according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering; or he who teacheth, on teaching; or he who exhorteth, on exhortation; he who giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he who ruleth, with diligence; he who showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer: distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with those who do rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind

not high things, but condescend to men of low state.

The Third Sunday after the Epiphany.

THE COLLECT.

O THOU most holy and perfect God, teach us to love one another with pure hearts fervently; to exercise forbearance and forgiveness toward our enemies; to recompense to no man evil for evil; and to be merciful, as thou, Father in heaven, art merciful. Grant this, we humbly beseech thee, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.. Amen.

THE GOSPEL.

Matth. viii. 1 — 13.

WHEN he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus

saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and lieth at home sick of the saying, Lord, my servant palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but speak vant shall be healed. For I the word only, and my seram a man, under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say unto this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to those who followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be

weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed,

so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed

in the self same hour.

THE EPISTLE.

Rom. xii. 16-21.

BE not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. THE COLLECT.

O GOD, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dan

gers, that, by reason of the frailty of our nature, we cannot always stand upright; grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GOSPEL.

Matth. viii. 23 — 34.

AND when he was entered into a ship, his disciples folAnd behold, lowed him. there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us, we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs,

exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And behold, they cried out saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? Art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine; and behold he whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. And they who kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed the possessed of the devils. And behold the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they besought him. that he would depart out of their coasts.

THE EPISTLE.

Rom. xiii. 1 — 7.

LET every soul be subject unto the higher powers; for there is no power but of God; the powers that be, are ordained of God. Who

soever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they who resist, shall receive to themselves punishment. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid

of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him who doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake. For, for this cause pay ye tribute also; for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
