INTRODUCTION.

THERE are three things which should be dear to every man-his religion-his country-and his home. Of these, Religion is the first. The love of our native land may never be known until the hour of exile. Home is liable to change and bereavement; but Religion, which comes with the innocence of early youth, and illumines the passionless stages of decay, is, like its Divine Founder, with us even to the end. None, therefore, who duly estimate the value of religious hope, can be indifferent to the character of their faith, because its progressive influence upon every joy and sorrow of human life depends upon the divinity of its origin.
