finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him. 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chas. teneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh, which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness, unto them which are exercised thereby. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees. 13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed. 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently, lest any man fail of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled: 16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. 18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned Of marriage. with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which voice they that heard, entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more. 20 For they could not endure that which was commanded: And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart. 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake. 22 But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of Angels: 23 To the general assembly, and Church of the first born which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect: 24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new Covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. 25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. 26 Whose voice then shook the earth, but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God ac ceptably, with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our God is a consuming fire. CHAP. XIII. Divers admonitions. Be not forgetful to entertain ET brotherly love continue. strangers, for thereby some have enter. tained Angels unawares. 3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. 4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers, and adulterers God will judge. 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness and be content with such things as ye have. For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. 7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God, whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation; 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines: for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. 10 We have an altar whereof they have no right to eat, which serve the Tabernacle. 11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the Sanctuary by the high Priest for sin, are burned without the camp. 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. 13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. 15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his Name. Ask in faith 16 But to do good, and to communicate forget not, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. 17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is un profitable for you. 18 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience in all things, willing to live honestly. 19 But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. 20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting Covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Faith and works. 13 Let no man say when he is tempt. | him, Sit thou here in a good place: and 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift, and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us, with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 19 Wherefore my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he hath promised to them that love him? 6 But ye have despised the poor. CHAP. II. Not to despise the poor MY brethren. [Y brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man, in vile raiment: 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery; said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the Law. 12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy, and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. 14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Debe warmed and filled: peace, ye part in notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body: what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God, thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with 223 Of the tongue. CHAP. III. Not arrogantly to reprove others. MY brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. shew out of a good conversation his 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion, and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy, and good fruits, without partiality, and with out hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace, of them that make peace. CHAP. IV. Against covetousness, pride, &c. For in many things we offend all. FROM whence come wars and fight. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things: behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth. 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity so is the tongue amongst our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind. 8 But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father: and there with curse we men, which are inade after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing: my brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who is a wise man and endued ings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts, that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers, and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever there. fore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace, wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble, 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God: resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you: cleanse your hands ye sin. ners, and purify your hearts ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren: he that speaketh evil of his bro ther, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the Law, and judgeth the Law: but if thon judge the Law, thou art not a doer of the Law, but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able Evil rejoicing. CHAP. V. Wicked rich men are to fear God's G% vengeance. O to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments moth eaten : 3 Your gold and silver is cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire: ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth and the cries of them which have reaped, are entered into the cars of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton: ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter: 6 Ye have condemned, and killed the just, and he doth not resist you. 7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord: behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 8 Be ye also patient; stablish your The First Epistle CHAP.
