fhould come in an humble manner to Jerufalem, that he should be infulted by the Jews, and fold for Thirty Pieces of Silver. The things which will yet come to pass, are the Two Sieges by Gog, and Chrift's Coming to deftroy him, and afterwards the Return of the Ten Tribes, and the Reign of the Meffiah On Earth.

Ezekiel only mentions the Overthrow of Gog, which Zachary delcribes Ch. 12. but he does not mention the Deftruction, of the Jews at Gog's fecond Coming. Zachary 14. and both thefe are before the Millennium, and must be diftinguished from the Third Invasion of Gog, after the Millennium defcribed in the Revelations: And I think, we ought to diftinguish the Sign of the Son of Man, as in Ch. 12 of Zachary, from. his actual Coming to ftand on Mount Olivet, Ch. 14. At the Sign of his Coming, all will mourn; at his Descent on the Mount, there will be an Earthquake; and after the Third Siege of Gog, will be the Second Resurrection and Judgment. Thus by these different Events, the Three Sieges of Gog may, be diftinguished.

Though we have had no Prophecy fince the Firft Ages of Chriftianity; yet the Prophecies in Daniel, Ezekiel, the Revelations, and in Efdras, are not yet fulfilled, till Gog and Ma gog's Antichriftian Kingdom is deftroyed, as well as the Return of the Jews, and the fecond Coming of the Meffiah with all his Saints, to his Glorious Reign in the Millennium.

Note, The Foolifh Shepherd may be a Defcription of Ma bomet; because Gog, the Antichrift, is mentioned in the next Chapter; and Ch. 13. The Falfe Prophet fhall fay, I am no Prophet, I am an Husbandman; for Man taught me to keep Cattel from my Youth. This may relate to Mahomet, who kept Sheep in his Youth; or to the Turks, who were at firft Scythian Herdímen. The Marks in the Prophet's Hands, muft be that given by the Beaft, Rev. 13, and this Falle Prophet will have some Succeffors, Rev. 19. v. 20. who will work fome falle Miracles to deceive the Beaft; and pretend to be Mahomet, who will come again, as they said he promised, to lead them into Paradile.

3. The Prophefies made by Visions, are fhort; but the lon ger Prophecies were given by the Word of God, which the Angel delivers by fpeaking. So the Angel fpoke in Zachary, (as the Septuagint expreffes it,) and Chrift fent the Revelati

ons to St. Fobn. The Angel explains the Visions which Za chary faw; and he declares, that the Angels are fent by God to walk thro' the Earth; and they faid, all the Earth was at Peace. V. 12. The Angel prays for Jerufalem; and Daniel mentions, that the Angels contend about the Intereft of the Countries over which they prefide; and Satan opposes the Angels, as appears by his ftanding at Joshua's right Hand. Thefe Vifions were in Dreams; because the Angel awaked Zachary ; and he lays, the Angel talked with him, as a Man awaked our of Sleep, and asked him, what feeft thou? and in Ch. 3. an Angelical State is promised to Joshua; I will give the place to walk amongst them that ftand by. This is accor ding to the Tranflation from the Hebrew.

4. Will next obferve, that Prodigies precede great Events, and they are fo appointed by Providence. Zachary calls Joshua and his Counsellors, according to the Septuagint, TTÓ, that is, Obfervers of Prodigies; and the occafion of that was, Chrift's Name of the Eaft, (by which Zachary calls him in St. Luke, Ch. 1.) for his Star was to be leen in the Eaft by the Magi, who followed it to Bethlehem ; and Ch. 14. v. 6. In that Day the Light fhall not be clear; v. 7. neither Day nor Night. This Darknels is a Prodigy, and precedes the Deftruction of the Nations. Zach. 10. v. 11. The deep Rivers fhall be dried, before the Return of the Jews, and before the Deftruction of Syria and Ægypt.

5. The Neglect of the Study of the Prophecies has occa fioned in this Age the Denial of a reveal'd Religion, and God's governing Providence by his Angels over the Kingdoms of the World; and the Denial of Prodigies upon the great Changes in Empires, is contrary to all Hiftories and Prophecies concerning them, and is one of the abfurd athei Atical Tenets of this Age. Since we may obferve, that Fire is a Symbol for God's Anger, all fiery Meteors represent it : and 'tis obferved, that in the late Northern Plague, a Ball of Fire fell on a great City, before the Plague there. Vide Phi lof. Tranfact.

6. Not only Hiftorical Events are delivered in Zachary, fuch as the Conqueft of Alexander, the War of the Macca bees, the Conquefts over the Jews by Pompey and Titus, and the Four Chariots to bring down the Pride of Affyria, and take away the Scepter from Ægypt; which fufficien ly demonftrate, that Providence pre-ordains and predict all the Changes in the Kingdoms of Men; but they confirm the Mofaic and Chriftian Morality: They threaten Plagues, S ord, Famine, for great Immoralities committed againft the Ten Commandments, which were delivered to Mofes, and appro ved by Chrift's Inftitution. Therefore Morality is a Religi on given by Infpiration, as well as the Precepts concerning our Faith in Chrift's Sacrifice, for the Remiffion of Sins. Cornelius was a Righteous Man, and a Deift, full of good Works and Prayers; but yet he wanted St. Peter to baptize

him, and tell him, by what Faith in Jefus Chrift his Sins muft be forgiven. The Morality of the Jews was revealed by Mofes, explained by all the Holy Prophets, and many moral Precepts are inferted in Zachary's Prophecy; and they ought to be efteemed as a Revealed Religion, firft to the Patriarchs before and after the Floud, then wrote on Tables by an An gel, and delivered to Moses.

Zachary, Ch. 1. blames the Jews for their Obftinacy, in not oblerving the Commandments given them by the former Prophets. Ch. 5. Zachary fees a Reaping-Hook to punih Theft and Perjury. Ch. 7. he promiles Plenty, if they judg ed righteously, fhew'd Mercy to their Brother, oppreffed not the Widow, Orphans, Strangers, nor bore Malice in their Minds. Ch. 10. he advifes to ask Rain from God, and not from Idols. Ch. 13. All falle Religion must be deftroyed. Ch. 14. The Lord fhall be King over all the Earth, and all Nations muft worship him. Ch. 18. v. 16. Let every Man Speak Truth with his Neighbour.

7. The Chriftian Religion is predicted by this Prophecy, Fofhua is made a Type of Chrift, building his Church; both are called the Eaft; both are Kings and Priefts in the Church. Fofbua is called, the Man the Eaft, Ch. 6. but Chrift, my Servant the Eaft; and 'tis faid to Jofua, Behold, I bring forth my Servant the Eaft; and he and his Companions are called to attend to this Prophecy: Therefore Fofhua is not properly the Eaft; but Chrift is called fo, Luke 1

Some Prophecies refpect a particular Hiftory in the Jewish Commonwealth; and they are Typical Hiftories and Prophecies of their Ecclefiaftical State. Alexander came to Jerufalem in a mean peaceable manner; and this reprefents Chrift's Coming to Jerufalem riding on an Afs. In this Prophecy, the Extent of Alexander's Dominion is from the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates, to the Mediterranean in the Weft; and from thofe Rivers, to the utmoft Parts of the Earth. And this is the Greatnefs and Extent of Chrift's Millenary Kingdom hereafter. Since Jaddus met Alexander with fo much Confi. dence in his Priefly Robes, is probable that he understood this Prophecy, by fome Revelation in the Dream Fofephus mentions. This Prophecy could never have been underfood as a Typical Prophecy of Chrift, but by fome Traditional totera

Interpretation from Zachary And this the Jews had, be caule they always believ'd that this was a Prophecy concerning the Meffiah's Coming to Jerufalem. And the Apoftles quote this Prophefie for Chrift's riding on an Ais, This Prophecy was literally fulfilled in the Civil Hiftory, and after, by the Divine Events. But this Interpretation by the Prophets was preferved amongst the Priefts, and after its Completion, farther explained by the Apofties; who added fome Circumftances, not mentioned, though agreeable to the Prophecy. Thus Alexander's coming to Ferufalem, is laid to be upon a υποζύγιον καὶ πῶλον νέον. St. Matthew and St. John call this an Ais, becaule our Saviour rode on him: But the Words of Zachary are more general, for an Horse, as well as an Afs. And in the Prophecy concerning the Thirty Pieces of Silver, Zachary is commanded to caft them into the House of the Lord; and St. Matthew, Ch. 27. quoting this from Jeremy or Zachary, adds this Expreffion, which is not in Zachary, (The Price of him that was valued, whom they of the Children of Ifrael did value, and gave them for the Potters Field.) All this is St. Matthew's Addition, for explaining of the Prophecy, and what the Jews did in buying the Potters Field,

But Zachary's Prophecy concerning Chrift's appearing, is without any Figure or Allegory. Chapter 12. accord. ing to St. Matthew, Chap. 24. v. 30. And then fhall appear the Sign of the Son of Man in Heaven; and then fhall all the Tribes of the Earth mourn, and they hall fee the Son of Man coming in the Heaven in the Clouds, with Power and great Glory.

Chapter 12. Zachary gives the plain Prophecy of our Sa viour's being infulted, and pierced by the Jews: They fhall look upon him, and mourn in the moft folemn manner, for his Crucifixion, and then be converted. It is mentioned as a thing paft, whom they have infulted, be |fore his appearing in the Clouds.

In the New Teftament many things are faid to be fulfilled, which are written in the Old. But this must be underftood as it is expreffed 1 Cor. Chap. 15. v. 54. Then hall be brought to pass the Saying that is written, Death is fwallowed ap in Victory. This is only an Ufe of the
