in this ordinance, to sit altogether as one company, or family party. This is the manner adopted in many places of worship in our land, and it appears the most suitable, from the nature of the institution itself, and for convenient arrangement in this part of our religious services.

The Family of Christ being thus seated at his Table in his Kingdom, and the Bread and the Wine being at hand, let the Minister read some, or all, of the passages of Scripture selected for the occasion, and then direct to his flock a few words of instruction and exhortation connected with this

service. He will then say, "Let us give thanks and glory to God, for the Salvation of Christ, and for this Ordinance." On saying this, let all kneel down, whilst the form of Prayer given in its place is used. When this is done, and all have resumed their seats, the Minister will take the Bread into his hand, and pronounce the following words:-" The Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his Disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is Body which is broken for you; this do in Remembrance of me. Having thus said and done, the Minister and his Assistants will partake; and then the latter will see that the Bread duly passes to the hands of all the Communicants. During the distribution and participation of the Sacramental Bread, a time of silence seems to be the most appropriate, leaving each one to holy meditation, and silent individual prayer.

When all shall have partaken, or rather a few minutes after, the Minister will rise and say, "Let us again give thanks and glory to God for the Salvation of Christ, and for this Institution." On hearing this, all will again kneel, and the same prayer will be used as before. When the Minister has finished, and the people have sat down again, he will say as follows::-"After the same manner in which the Lord Jesus had taken the Bread, and given it to his Disciples, he also took the Cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; and they all drank of it; and he said unto them, This Cup is the New Testament in My Blood, which is shed for you, and for many, for the Remission of Sins. This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in Remembrance of Me." The Minister having thus spoken, will put the Cup or Cups into the hands of

the assistants, and sit down. He will then partake, along with the assistants; and immediately after, the Cups will be passed on from pew to pew, and from individual to individual, while all remain in silent meditation and prayer as before.

When all have drunk of this Cup of Salvation, and a few minutes' pause has followed, the Minister will rise and say:-" Beloved Brethren,-Hear the Consolations of this Holy Communion with Jesus Christ our Saviour, who gave his Life a Ransom unto God for our Redemption

Unto &c.

"Let us now

This being fully over, the Minister will say, sing a Hymn, as our Lord and his Disciples did, at the time this Ordinance was instituted." He will then give out a Hymn, (either the one in due place, or another,) and all will stand up and praise the Lord, for the Salvation of Christ, and for this Institution.

Some parts of what is here stated are repeated in another place, but it was thought better to give them here in a connected form.

The rest of the Forms given in this Manual do not seem to require more particular Directions than those inserted at the proper places.

Minister. Let us sing to the praise and the glory of God:-" Before," &c. [pronouncing the two first lines of the following hymn :-Or, referring to some other, and pronouncing the two first lines of it.]

1. Before Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations bow with sacred joy;
Know that the Lord is God alone;
He can create, and he destroy.

2. His sovereign power, without our aid
Made us of clay, and formed us men;
And when like wandering sheep we strayed,
He brought us to his fold again.

3. We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs;
High as the heavens our voices raise;

And earth with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy Courts with sounding praise.

4. Wide as the world is thy Command;
Vast as eternity thy love :

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

[Still standing.]

Minister-Let us pray.

[All kneel.]

Minister.- Almighty God, we come into thy holy

presence, and bow down ourselves before thee. O Lord God, we adore and extol thy Glorious and Eternal Name. Thou art the Creator, the Upholder, and the Governor of this world, and of the whole Universe. Thou art the King of kings: Thou art Lord over all.

Congregation.-O God, we praise and adore thy Glorious and Eternal Name.

Minister.-O Lord Almighty, thou didst, in thy abundant goodness, create man in holiness, and in happiness: Thou didst teach him to know thee, to love thee, to serve thee, and to enjoy thee. But, O how altered is our condition!-how greatly are we estranged from thee in our present state!-guilt and woe are upon us because we have fallen.

Congregation.-O Lord God, we deplore our estrangement from thee.

Minister.—All righteous Jehovah, we lament before thee that fatal act of Disobedience, which has changed. the beauty, and holiness, and happiness of this world, into sin and sorrowing, into vanity and vexation of spirit. Just, O God, and holy art Thou in all the Judgments, and in all thy Dealings toward the creatures which thou hast made.

Congregation. - Holy and righteous, O God, are all thy judgments.

Minister.-Almighty God, we confess before thee, not only the sin of our race, but also our own sins individually. We have all sinned against thee, and come short of thy glory. We are unholy and sinful creatures. In our thoughts, and in our words, and in our actions, we have dishonoured thy Holy Name. Iniquities have prevailed against us, and we are unrighteous and ungodly. Most Holy God, we stand all before thee condemned, because of our transgressions. Have mercy upon us, O Lord: Have mercy upon us, we earnestly beseech thee. Enter not into
