PRAYERS IN TIME OF WAR.

MORNING.

LORD, our God, without whom we can do nothing, but through whom we can do all things; we implore Thy gracious aid in the duties and trials that await us this day. Help us to be faithful to all trusts, fearless in all dangers, cheerful in all distresses and obedient to discipline. Above all, make us good soldiers of Jesus Christ, following Him whithersoever He may lead us, contending for His cause, and glorying in His cross..

Take us, O God, and all whom we love under Thy heavenly guardianship and protection. Supply all our needs. Deliver us from the evils that surround us. Preserve us from the sins that so easily beset us: and enable us to be faithful unto death, that we may receive the crown of life. For Christ's sake. Amen.

EVENING.

GOD, the Strength of all that put their trust in Thee, our Shield in danger, our very present Help in time of trouble; we give Thee thanks that Thou hast kept us in life through another day. Make us mindful that nothing can befall us without Thy divine permission, and give us grace to commit our souls unto Thee as we lie down to sleep. Defend us from all adversities which may befall the body and from all temptations which may assault the soul.

GOD, who never sleepest, and art never weary, have mercy upon those who watch to-night: on the sentry, that he may be alert; on those who command, that they may be strengthened with counsel; on the sick, that they may obtain sleep; on the wounded, that they may find ease; on the faint-hearted, that they may hope again; on the light-hearted, lest they forget Thee; on the dying, that they may find peace; on the sinful, that they may turn again. And save us, good Lord. Amen.

BEFORE A BATTLE.

ALMIGHTY God, Sovereign Ruler among the nations, who sittest on the throne of the universe judging right, consider our just cause and help Thy servants in the perils of battle. Stir up Thy strength, O God, and come and help us. Give wisdom to our leaders, courage and strength to our men; and turn to flight the forces of the enemy. To Thee we commit our lives, beseeching Thy forgiveness of our many sins and Thy redemption of our souls in Christ Jesus. Čomfort us with Thy love: spare us, if it be Thy will, to those that love us; and if not, help us to lay down our lives gladly: in His Name and for His sake who gave His life for us men and our salvation, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

AFTER A BATTLE.

ALMIGHTY God, who in Thy mercy hast covered our heads in the day of battle and saved us from the hands of our enemies; we give Thee remembrance and grateful thanks, and we give our lives anew to Thy service. Because Thou hast been our help, therefore in the shadow of Thy wings will we rejoice. Because Thou hast delivered our souls from death, we will walk before Thee in the land of the living. Continue to us Thy protection, we beseech Thee, and strengthen our trust in Thee as our God and Father in Christ Jesus. Encourage our hearts as we go forward; crown our arms with speedy and decisive victory: and give to the world the blessing of an honourable and lasting peace. For Christ's sake. Amen.

SEAMEN.

ALMIGHTY God, who alone commandest the winds and the waves, and they obey Thee; we Thine unworthy servants, separated from the dwellings of men, worship Thee the living and true God who hast made the earth and sea; and beholding Thy wonders in the deep, we magnify Thy Name, and ascribe unto Thee dominion and glory for ever. Vouchsafe to us, O Lord, the continued defense and

bounty of Thy providence. Shield us from dangers seen and unseen. Be Thou our Refuge and our Strength; our very present Help in temptation; our covert from the storms that assail the soul; our Salvation from the sins that so easily beset us. Unto Thee we commit our lives and the great cause to which we have dedicated them. God help us all to honour the flag, to defend the right and to assail the wrong. Give safety to the fleet and victory over our enemies, we beseech Thee; and bless all those we have left at home. For Christ's sake. Amen.

LORD NELSON'S PRAYER BEFORE TRAFALGAR.

MAY the great God whom I worship grant to my country and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in any one tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature of the fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to Him that made me, and may His blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country faithfully. To Him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen. Amen. Amen.

UNDER THE SEA.

Though I sink beneath the sea,
Even here I am with Thee;
Thy right hand still holdeth me;
Still Thy mercy saves.

LORD, who rulest over all, and dost according to Thy will in heaven and in earth and in the sea and in all deep places; vouchsafe unto us who are now traversing the great waters Thy favourable regard and Thy seasonable protection. Teach us in all our ways to acknowledge Thee and in these dangers to trust in Thee. Though deep should call unto deep, and all Thy waves and billows should go over us, yet do Thou command Thy loving-kindness in the day time and cause Thy song in the night to be with us. Be pleased to grant us safety for our lives and success in our undertakings, and keep our souls and deliver them, since only Thou canst, O Lord, our Strength and our Sal vation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

AIRMEN.

On Thy wings of love upbear
Soul and body, as I dare
All the perils of the air:

Father, hear and save.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast set the firmament in its place; have mercy, we beseech Thee, on us and upon all those who fly in the air. Grant us the assurance of Thy presence when we are amidst the clouds and wonders of the sky, whether in the calm sunshine or surrounded by the thick mists of darkness and storm. And uphold us lest we fall, O God of our righteousness; for Thy mercy is unto the heavens, and Thy truth unto the clouds. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE WOUNDED.

GOD, who art always mindful of Thy children, look down upon me, for I have been strong, and now am brought low. Gladden my heart, I beseech Thee, with the sense of Thy mercy present with me in my affliction, and deliver me from all repinings and from any doubt of Thee. Give me patience to endure suffering, and cheerfulness with those who minister unto me. Help me to bear the burden of sacrifice and to speak the word of consolation, that as I tried to do my duty in action, so I may serve Thee also while I wait. And if it be Thy holy will, restore me to health and strength, I beseech Thee, for Thy mercies' sake. In Thee, O Lord, do I trust, and I lay my sins on Him who was wounded for our transgressions. Thy Name will I remember in my bed, while my flesh shall rest in hope and my soul shall praise Thee. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS.

FOR THE PRESIDENT.

LORD God, our Refuge from one generation to another, we beseech Thee of Thy mercy to bless the President of the United States with Thy heavenly grace, that in all his great burdens and anxieties in this time of war, he may find his strength in Thee and his consolation and support in the loyalty of this people to the high ideals upon
