HYMN 238.

TRUE AND FALSE ZE AL.

ZEAL

EAL is that pure and heav'nly flame
The fire of love fupplies;

But that which often bears the name,
Is felf in a difguife.

2 True zeal is merciful and mild,
Can pity and forbear:

The false is headstrong, fierce and wild,
And breaths revenge and war.

While zeal for truth the christian warms,
He knows the worth of peace;

But felf contends for names and forms,
Its party to increase.

Zeal has attain'd its highest aim,
Its with is fatisfy'd,

If finners love the Saviour's name,
Nor feeks it ought befide.

But self, however well employ'd,
Has its own ends in view:
And fays, as boafting Jehu cry'd;
"Come fee what I can do !"

6 Self may its poor reward obtain,
And be applauded here;

But zeal the best applause will gain
When JESUS fhall appear.

7 Dear LORD! the idol self dethrone,
And from our hearts remove;
And let no zeal by us be shewn,
But that which springs from love.

HYMN 239.

LOOKING TO JESUS.

How glorious the Lamb

Is feen on the throne!

His labours are o'er,
His conquefts are won.
A kingdom is giv'n
Into the Lamb's hand,
In earth, and in heav'n,
For ever to ftand.

2 Ye finners below

Then truft in the LORD;

Look up to his arm,
His honour, his word

HYMN 240.:

GRACE.

I RICH grace, free grace moft sweetly

calls,
Directly come who will;

Juft as you are, for CHRIST receives
Poor helpless finners still.

2 'Tis grace each day that feeds our fouls
Grace keeps us inly poor;
And, O! that nothing else but grace
May rule for evermore !

HYMN 241.

O! to the hills I lift my eyes,
Thy promis'd help I claim;
Father of mercies, glorify
The holy JESU's name. i

Salvation in that name is found;
Balm of my grief and care;
A med'cine for my ev'ry wound,
All, all I want is there.

1 Still, O LORD, our faith increase, Cleanse from all unrighteousness ;

Thee, th' unholy cannot fee,
Make, O make us meet for thee!

Ev'ry vile affection kill,
Free our fouls from ev'ry ill;
Conquer ev'ry reigning fin,
Write thy law of love within.

2 Hence may all our actions flow,
Love the proof that CHRIST we know,
Mutual love the token be,

LORD, that we belong to thee!
Love, thine image, love impart,
Stamp it on each face and heart;
Only love to us be giv❜n,
LORD, we afk no other heav'n.

HYMN 243.

THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD RELIED ON,

I

OUR

URGOD! how firm his promise ftands,
Ev'n when he hides his face!

He trufts in our redeemer's hands

His glory and his grace.

2 Then why, my foul, these fad complaints, Since CHRIST and we are one?

Our GoD is faithful to his faints,
Is faithful to his Son.

3 Beneath his fmiles my heart has liv'd,
And part of heav'n poffefs'd;
I'll praife him for his grace receiv'd,
And truft him for the rest.

HYMN 244•

CHRIST'S INTERCESSION.
HEBREWS vii, 25.

A

Dawn of hope my foul-revives,
And banishes despair;

If yet for me IMMANUEL lives i
To plead his potent pray'r.

2 Difpel then, LORD, these fhades of night,
My fullen doubts remove;

O fend a ray of heav'nly light,
And lead me to thy love.

HYMN 245.

LAW AND GOSPEL.

wol

HE law commands and makes us

TH

know

What duties to our GoD we owe;

But 'tis the gofpel must reveal

Where lies our ftrength to do his will.

2 The law discovers guilt and fin,

And fhews how vile our hearts have been;
Only the gofpel can exprefs

Forgiving love, and cleanfing grace.
