Behold, He that keepeth Israel: shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord Himself is thy keeper: the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand;

So that the sun shall not burn thee by day : neither the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil : yea, it is even He that shall keep thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in from this time forth for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

the earth in a wonderful order, making day and night to succeed each other; I make my humble address to Thy divine majesty, begging of Thee mercy and protection this night and ever. Lord, pardon all my sins, my light and rash words, the vanity and impiety of my thoughts, my unjust and uncharitable actions, and whatsoever I have transgressed against Thee this day, or at any time before. Behold, O God, my soul is troubled in the remembrance of my sins, in the frailty and sinfulness of my flesh, exposed to every temptation, and of itself not able to resist any. Lord God of mercy, I earnestly beg of Thee to give me a great portion of Thy grace, such as may be sufficient and effectual

for the mortification of all my sins and vanities and disorders: that as I have formerly served my lust and unworthy desires, so now I may give myself up wholly to Thy service and the studies of holy life.

Blessed Lord, teach me frequently and sadly to remember my sins; and be Thou pleased to remember them no more: let me never forget Thy mercies, and do Thou still remember to do me good. Teach me to walk always as in Thy presence: ennoble my soul with great degrees of love to Thee, and seal my spirit with great fear, and veneration of Thy holy Name and laws; that it may become the great employment of my whole life to serve Thee, to advance Thy glory, to root out all the accursed habits of sin; that in holiness of life, in humility, in charity, in chastity, and all the ornaments of grace, I may by patience wait for the coming of our Lord Jesus. Amen.

Teach me, O Lord, to number my days that I may apply my heart unto wisdom; ever to remember my last end, that I may not dare to sin against Thee. Let Thy holy angels be ever present with me to keep me in all my ways from the malice and violence of the spirits of darkness, from evil company, and the occasions and opportunities of evil, from all the ways of sinful shame, from the hands of all mine enemies, from a sinful life, and from despair in the hour of death. Thou, O brightest Jesu, shine gloriously upon me; let Thy mercy and the light of Thy countenance sustain me in all my agonies, weaknesses, and temptations. Give me opportunity of a prudent and spiritual guide, and of receiving the holy Sacrament; and let Thy loving Spirit so lead me in the ways of peace and safety, that with the testimony of a good conscience, and the sense of Thy mercies and refreshments, I may depart this life in the unity

of the Church, in the love of God, and a sure and certain hope of salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord and most blessed Saviour. Amen. (171)

Or this.

QEMIT, forgive, pardon, O Lord all my sins involuntary,

committed in deed, word, or thought, in ignorance or in knowledge, in conception or intention; forgive them all, O Lord, as Thou art good and gracious. Amen. (172)

MONDAY.

GOD, most high and mighty, Who alone hast immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; Who in wisdom hast made all things, dividing the light from the darkness, appointing the sun to rule the day, and the moon and the stars to govern the night; and Who hast counted me worthy, though a sinner, to come before Thee at this time that I may confess my sins and render unto Thee my evening thanksgiving; Grant, O loving Lord, that my prayers may be set forth in Thy sight as the incense, and receive them as a sweet-smelling savour. Give me at this present eventide and throughout the coming hours Thy peace: put upon me the armour of light: preserve me from terror by night and from all evil that walketh in darkness, and vouchsafe me that sleep which Thou hast ordained as refreshment for our weakness. O Lord, the giver of all good, grant that my heart may be delivered from all evil imaginations; so that, lying down to rest I may think upon Thy Name in the night season; and, being enlightened by meditation on Thy commandments, may again with joy of heart give praise for Thy goodness, and offer up my prayers and supplications for Thy mercy upon mine own

sins, and those of all Thy people, on whom I pray Thee pitifully to look down. For Thou, O God, art good and gracious, and to Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be ascribed glory now, and for ever and ever. Amen. (173)

Or this.

LORD God, the Life of mortals, the Light of the faithful, the strength of those who labour, and the repose of the dead, grant me a tranquil night, free from all disturbance, that, after a time of quiet sleep, I may by Thy bounty at the return of light be endued with strength from the Holy Spirit, and enabled in safety to render thanks unto Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (174)

TUESDAY.

LORD, my Lord, Who hast defended me from every arrow that flieth by day, deliver me also from every evil thing that walketh in darkness. Accept the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Grant that I may pass through the night-watches blameless, unscathed by ill. Deliver me from all terrors and fears inspired by the great enemy. Give rest to my soul, and fill my thoughts with an earnest contemplation of the scrutiny of Thy dread and just judgement. Fulfil my whole being with fear of Thee, and mortify my members which are upon the earth; so that in the quietness of sleep I may be enlightened by the vision of Thy judgements. Put away from me all unseemly imaginations and hurtful lusts. Strengthen me in the hour of prayer that I may stand fast in the faith, and run swiftly in the way of Thy commandments, through the good pleasure and loving kindness of Thine only begotten Son, with Whom Thou art blessed, together with Thy gracious and lifegiving Spirit, now, always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Or this.

LORD Jesu, Who hast commanded us to watch and pray, and to be always ready, keep me ever mindful, I beseech Thee, of the uncertainty of life, and of the account I am one day to give, that when I depart hence I may sleep in Thee, and at Thy appearing may rise again to dwell with Thee for ever; Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest ever one God, world without end. Amen. (176)

WEDNESDAY.

ALMIGHTY Father, Who givest the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, vouchsafe to receive me this night and ever into Thy favour and protection, defending me from all sad casualties and evil accidents, ruling and governing me with Thy Holy Spirit, that all darkness and hurtful ignorance, all infidelity and weakness of heart, all inordinate fear and carnal affections may be removed far from me, that I, being justified in our Lord Jesus, may be sanctified by Thy Spirit, and glorified by Thy infinite mercies in the day of the glorious appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. (177)

Or this.

GOD, the keeper of Israel, Who neither slumberest nor sleepest, watch over me, I beseech Thee, this night, that no evil accident befall me, nor any harm come nigh my dwelling. Keep me from sin and from the thought of it. Grant that I may lie down at peace with Thee, and in charity with all men, and may rise refreshed and ready, in soul and body, to do Thy holy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
