sins, and those of all Thy people, on whom I pray Thee pitifully to look down. For Thou, O God, art good and gracious, and to Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be ascribed glory now, and for ever and ever. Amen.

(173) Or this. O ,

the faithful, the strength of those who labour, and the repose of the dead, grant me a tranquil night, free from all disturbance, that, after a time of quiet sleep, I may by Thy bounty at the return of light be endued with strength from the Holy Spirit, and enabled in safety to render thanks unto Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(174) TUESDAY. O ,

every arrow that flieth by day, deliver me also from every evil thing that walketh in darkness. Accept the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Grant that I may pass through the night-watches blameless, unscathed by ill. Deliver me from all terrors and fears inspired by the great enemy. Give rest to my soul, and fill my thoughts with an earnest contemplation of the scrutiny of Thy dread and just judgement. Fulfil my whole being with fear of Thee, and mortify my members which are upon the earth ; so that in the quietness of sleep I may be enlightened by the vision of Thy judgements. Put away from me all unseemly imaginations and hurtful lusts. Strengthen me in the hour of prayer that I may stand fast in the faith, and run swiftly in the way of Thy commandments, through the good pleasure and loving kindness of Thine only begotten Son, with whom Thou art blessed, together with Thy gracious and lifegiving Spirit, now, always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

and pray, and to be always ready, keep me ever mindful, I beseech Thee, of the uncertainty of life, and of the account I am one day to give, that when I depart hence I may sleep in Thee, and at Thy appearing may rise again to dwell with Thee for ever; Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest ever one God, world without end. Amen.

(176) WEDNESDAY. 0

ALMIGHTY Father, Who givest the sun

for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, vouch-afe to receive me this night and ever into Thy favour and protection, defending me from all sad casualties and evil accidents, ruling and governing me with Thy Holy Spirit, that all darkness and hurtful ignorance, all infidelity and weakness of heart, all inordinate fear and carnal affections may be removed far from me, that I, being justified in our Lord Jesus, may be sanctified by Thy Spirit, and glorified by Thy infinite mercies in the day of the glorious appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

(177) Or this.

O ,

berest nor sleepest, watch over me, I beseech Thee, this night, that no evil accident befall me, nor any harm come nigh my dwelling. Keep me from sin and from the thought of it. Grant that I may lie down at peace with Thee, and in charity with all men, and may rise refreshed and ready, in soul and body, to do Thy holy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(178) THURSDAY. S I lie down to sleep, grant me, O Lord,

A of me

the dull sleep of sin, and from all indulgence of sloth and darkness. Check the violence of passion. Quench the fiery darts of the wicked one, launched forth by his craft against me. Repress the assaults of my flesh, and allay every earthly and worldly lust within me. Grant to me, O my God, a watchful mind, ch thoughts, sober dispositions; and give me gentle sleep free from all illusions of the evil one. Assist me in the hour of prayer, that I may stand fast in Thy commandments, and ever hold Thy judgements in firm remembrance.

Give me grace through the night-season to celebrate Thy praise, to bless Thee, and to magnify Thy all-honoured and all-glorious Name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now, always, and ever and ever. Amen.

(179) Or this. GOD, Who in the beginning didst rest from

all Thy works which Thou hadst made; Grant unto me that, having diligently wrought Thy works_ all the days of my appointed time on earth, I may at length enter into Thine everlasting rest, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FRIDAY.

LORD Jesus, give me what Thou command

est; command what Thou desirest. Prepare my soul for Thy coming; come when it seemeth to Thee good. Give me a penitent and a patient spirit to expect Thee; and come as Thou wilt, 0 Thou Who art the salvation of all them that trust in Thee. Set, I beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus, Thy death, Thy cross and passion, Thy merits and Thy blood, between Thy judgement and my soul, now and ever, but especially in the hour of my death. Let not my death be sudden; let it not come and find me unprepared ; let it not be so dreadful but that I shall keep my faith, hope, and charity, my memory, and the soundness of my mind even to the last. Be Thou my God and Protector. Grant to my sins mercy and pardon, to Thy Church peace and concord, to me the chief of sinners grace in this life and glory hereafter. Even so, Come Lord Jesus, and have mercy upon me. Amen.

(181) Or this. INTO Thy hands I commit myself, blessed Lord,

this night and for ever. O Thou Sun of righteousness, keep me from utter darkness, and let me so sleep in peace that I may ever be ready to arise and meet Thee in Thy glory, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest one God, world without end. Amen.

grace and salvation. Let Thy holy angels pitch their tents round about and dwell here, that no illusion of the night may abuse me, the spirits of darkness may not come near to hurt me, no evil or sad accident oppress me; and let' the eternal Spirit of the Father dwell in my soul and body, filling every corner of my heart with light and grace. Let no deed of darkness overtake me; and let Thy blessing, most blessed God, be upon me for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Into Thy hands, most blessed Jesu, I commend my soul and body, for Thou hast redeemed both with Thy most precious blood. So bless and sanctify my sleep unto me, that it may be temperate, holy, and safe, a refreshment to my wearied body, to enable it so to serve my soul that both may serve Thee with a neverfailing duty. O let me never sleep in sin or death eternal, but give me a watchful and a prudent spirit, that I may omit no opportunity of serving Thee; that whether I sleep or wake, live or die, I may be Thy servant; that when the work of my life is done I may rest in the bosom of my Lord, till, by the voice of the archangel, the trump of God, I shall be awakened, and called to sit down and feast in the eternal supper of the Lamb. Grant this, O Lamb of God, for the honor of Thy mercies, and the glory of Thy Name, 0 most merciful Saviour and Redeemer Jesus. Amen.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus, Who hath sent His angels, and kept me this day from the destruction that walketh at noon, and the arrow that flieth by day; and hath given me His Spirit to restrain me from those evils to which my own weaknesses, and my evil habits, and my unquiet enemies, would easily betray me. Blessed and for ever hallowed be Thy Name, for that never-ceasing shower of blessing by which I live, and am content and blessed, and provided for in all necessities, and set forward in my duty and way to heaven. Blessing, honour, glory, and power be unto Him that sitteth on the throne, and to the Lamb, for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy_is our God, holy is the Almighty, holy is the Immortal; holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth, have mercy upon me.

the coming night, and keep me while I sleep; that so, watching, I may be with Christ, and sleeping I may be at peace. Amen.
