ask in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ, who is the only mediator. And at the conclusion submit to his will; and no doubt but in God's good time my dearly beloved sister will prevail.

Farewell. My kind love to your mother; and believe me to be, in the bond of the covenant,

Yours to serve for the Lord's sake,

W. H. S.S.

DCXXXIX.

January 19, 1802.

LAST night I received my dear mother's letter; but was surprised at her talking about another, having never received any letter from you but one.

As to my poor dear Becky, I am afraid to write to her, lest 1 should add affliction to her bonds; but forget her, or you, or the rest in your family, I cannot; and I hope in my God I never shall. My daughter Nis now my daughter in a better sense; I have begotten her again under the influence of God. Last Sunday week little Ann T was raised to hope, and her army of terrors dispersed; and under the same discourse another young woman came forth into the glorious liberty of the children. of God, after sitting in the dark region of the shadow of death many days. Thus mightily grows the word of God and prevails, in spite of men and devils.

Having a bed, and all necessary furniture, in my little study at the chapel, I sometimes do not put my head out of doors from

Saturday afternoon till Tuesday evening; for I found that going out on a Sunday evening after preaching pinched me sadly, so that I now abide in my little cabin, where I am writing a series of letters upon the Holy Trinity, the personality of the Holy Ghost, and our union, communion, and fellowship with him; having of late preached much upon these subjects.

My poor Becky's way is hedged up with thorns, and there is a lion in her way; but you must not wonder if the Lord fulfils his word even in her behalf. "The lion shall lie down with the lamb, and a little child shall lead them." I have seen sturdy oaks rooted up and thrown down. We are chosen in the furnace of affliction; but "through fire and water (saith God) will I bring them out into a wealthy place." "I will work, and who shall let" or hinder? "My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.".

I often wish I had you all under my roof, where I doubt not but the ravens would bring bread and flesh, both in the morning and evening. But it must not be so; we must be scattered up and down the country, to be of use, or as warnings to others, who hear strange accounts about us, which raises

Our hearts and souls, however,

in others.
cannot be scattered.

I have a son in the faith at Walsingham in Norfolk; and another in Norwich, who has lately written to me; and I purpose (God willing) in the month of April to visit them; then to go to the Island; then to Grantham, to Leicester, and then home. This plan I have long fixed, should God permit me to execute it. Let nothing deter my poor, dear mother. Christ came to seek and save lost sinners. Banquets prepared

by God are for the hungry and thirsty; the good Physician is for the sick, the lame, the halt, the maimed, the broken-hearted, the distressed, the wounded in spirit, and those who are touched with love-sickness and fits of jealousy. A Surety is provided for debtors and bankrupts ; and he tells us to come, and promises not to cast us out; and what he says is true, hearty, affectionate and sincere.

My kind love to the swallows, and to your son; and accept the same yourself. God bless thee.
