things to those who feel their need of, and trust in him. Many were comforted with hopes of seeing me in a gaol, and have hinted as much. Next Sunday week, however, if God permit, they are to be informed that all our expenses are paid. This will knock down Sanballat; for truly men's hatred to God and his worship is most dreadful; and true it is, that they who are not with Christ are against him, and they that gather not to him do scatter from him. And we know that the same enmity, hatred, and rebellion, are alive in us all, showing to our sorrow, that they are born of the flesh, and are flesh, loving the lusts of the flesh, and despising God. But that which this carnal mind does and favours, "I allow not," says Paul, ،، therefore it is not I,” the saint; nor grace, that makes me a saint; "but sin that dwelleth in me.' And this sin, or corruption, or the flesh, or the law in the members, or the old man, or the evil imagination, or the carnal mind, (for it goes by all these names) will live and work in us, and clog, plague, hinder, and interrupt us, as long as we are in this world. But the good Spirit will banish it from the soul at death, and from the body at the resurrection, when the

Grace, mercy, and peace, be to my old companion in travail.

IF there was nothing of Christ, and his Spirit, and of his treasure, in us, Satan would not be at so much trouble and labour in harassing, buffeting, and plaguing us. If this accursed monster be our king-if he be our false god-if he has possession of the palace-if we are his goods, and are kept in his false peace, we must be led captive at his will. What is to hinder? We are altogether without strength before this pursuer; but he has no authority, dominion, or power, over the empire of our King of kings. And this was what I observed from my first convictions; hence he had recourse to temptations, arts, wiles, traps, snares, fiery darts, blasphemous suggestions, and evil thoughts, exciting enmity, rebellion, and desperation, against our Creator. These, however, are his own works, his own crimes, working in

But all this is not taking us captive at his will, nor making us the servants of sin.

Where the Holy Spirit takes possession, there the kingdom of God is begun; and even under his alarming, awakening, quickening, convicting, and convincing operations, Satan is cast out. Carnal ease, blindness of mind, a love to and delight in sin, enmity to God, and taking pleasure in vanity, while God is not in all our thoughts;-these are the things in which, and by which, Satan reigns and rules in us. But this is not thy case, nor mine. How many orders has he given us that have not been obeyed! And how many snares have we seen and escaped, in which the old serpent, with all his wisdom, has failed!

Mr. S. who has so long followed me in the North, and about the isle, is now come to be a near neighbour in town. He is in a most damnable error concerning our blessed Saviour, and makes himself very busy about me. He has two meetings in town, and has made a great stir among us, being much followed, even by some of our friends, who have tried him, till their heat is much abated; and many of the old hearers where he preaches have withdrawn from him, and
