The Compilers have endeavoured to include in One Volume, and under a single arrangement, all that is essential to a Hymn Book for the Sanctuary, the Closet, the Domestic Circle, and the Social Gathering. The co-operation of many valued friends in the protracted labour of selection and revision demands grateful acknowledgment. Especially are the Compilers indebted to Authors who have most readily and generously permitted their compositions to be inserted, or who have furnished original Hymns. By the equally kind permission of the executors of Mr. Montgomery and those of Mr. Conder, the book is enriched with a large number of Hymns by these departed poets. The labour has been on all sides a labour of love: its results are now dedicated to the service of the churches and to the glory of God, July, 1857. |
