To keep your armour bright,
Attend with conftant care;

Still walking in your Captain's fight,
And watching unto pray'r.
Ready for all alarms,
Stedfaftly fet your face;

And always exercise your arms,

4

And ufe your every grace.
Pray, without ceafing pray,
(Your Captain gives the word)

His fummons cheerfully obey,

And call upon the Lord :
To God your every want
Inftant in pray'r difplay;

Pray, always pray and never faint;

Pray, with out ceafing pray.

HYMN CLXXXIII.

Seek ye the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added, LUKE xii. 31.

PLACE,

LACE, troubled foul, thou need'ft not fear, Thy great Provider ftill is near;

Who fed thee laft, will feed thee ftill,

Be calm, and fink into his will.

2 The Lord, who built the earth and sky,
In mercy ftoops to hear thy cry;
His promife all may freely claim,
"Afk, and receive in Jefu's name."
3 His ftores are open all and free
To fuch as truly upright be;

Water and bread he'll give for food,
With all things elfe which he fees good.
4 Your facred hairs which are so small,
By God himself are number'd all:
This truth he's publish'd all abroad,
That men may learn to trust the Lord.

5 The ravens daily he doth feed,

And fends them food as they have need,
Altho' they nothing have in ftore,

Yet as they lack he gives them more.
6 Then do not feek with anxious care,
What ye shall eat, or drink, or wear:
Your heav'nly Father will you feed,
He knows that all thefe things you need.
7 Without referve, give Chrift your heart;
Let him his righteoufnefs impart;
Then all things elfe he'll freely give,
With him you all things shall receive.
8 Thus fhall the foul be truly blest
That feeks in God his only reft;
May I that happy perfon be,
In time, and in eternity!

SUFFERING.

HYMN CLXXXIV.

COME on, my partners in distress,

My comrades through the wilderness,
Who fill your bodies feel;

Awhile forget your griefs and fears,
And look beyond this vale of tears
To that celeftial hill.

2 Beyond the bounds of time and space
Look forward to that heav'nly place,
The faints' fecure abode :

On faith's ftrong eagle-pinions rife,
And force your paffage to the skies,
And scale the mount of God.
3 Who fuffer with your mafter here,
We fhall before his face appear,

And by his fide fit down:

To patient faith the prize is fure,
And all that to the end endure

The crofs, fhall wear the crown.

4 Thrice-bleffed blifs, infpiring hope;
It lifts the fainting spirits up;
It brings to life the dead!
Our conflicts here fhall foon be past;
And you and I afcend at laft,
Triumphant with our Head.

5 That great myfterious Deity
We foon with open face fhall fee;
The beatific fight

Shall fill heav'n's founding courts with praife,
And wide diffufe the golden blaze

Of everlafting light.

6 The Father fhining on his throne,
The glorious co-eternal Son,
The Spirit, one and feven,
Confpire our rapture to complete ;
And lo! we fall before his feet,

And filence heightens heav'n.
7 In hope of that ecftatic pause,
Jefu, we now fuftain thy cross,
And at thy footstool fall,
Till thou our hidden life reveal,
Till thou our ravifh'd fpirits fill,
And God is all in all.

I

HYMN CLXXXV.

CAST on the fidelity

Of my redeeming Lord,
I fhall his falvation fee,
According to his word;

[ocr errors]

Credence to his word I give,
My Saviour in diftreffes paft
Will not now his fervant leave,
But bring me through at last.
2 Better than my boding fears

To me thou oft haft prov'd;
Oft obferv'd my filent tears,
And challeng'd thy belov'd:
Mercy to my rescue flew,

And death ungrafp'd his fainting prey;
Pain before thy face withdrew,

And forrow fled away.

3 Now as yesterday the fame,
In all my troubles nigh,
Jefus, on thy word and name
I ftedfaftly rely:

Sure as now the grief I feel,

The promis'd joy I foon fhall have ;
Sav'd again, to finners tell

Thy pow'r and will to fave,

4 To thy bleffed will refign'd,
And ftay'd on that alone,
I thy perfect ftrength fhall find,
Thy faithful mercies own;
Compafs'd round with fongs of praise,
My All to my Redeemer give,
Spread thy miracles of grace,

I

And for thy glory live.

FATH)

HYMN CLXXXVI.

ATHER, in thy name I pray
Of thy incarnate love,

Humbly afk, that as my day

My fuff'ring ftrength may prove :
When my forrows most increase,
Let thy ftrongeft joys be giv'n;
Jefu, come with my diftrefs,
And agony is heav'n.

I

2 Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
For good remember me !

Me, whom thou haft caus'd to truft
For more than life on thee:
With me in the fire remain,

Till like burnish'd gold I shine,
Meet through confecrated pain,
To fee thy face divine.

HYMN CLXXXVII.

THOU Lamb of God, thou Prince of Peace,"

For thee my thirsty foul doth pine!
My longing heart implores thy grace,
O, make me in thy likeneis fhine!
2 With fraudlefs, even, humble mind,
Thy will in all things may 1 fee;
In love be ev'ry with refign'd,

And hallow'd my whole heart to thee.
3 When pain o'er my weak flesh prevails,
With lamb-like patience arm my breast;
When grief my wounded fou! affails,
In lowly meeknefs may I rest.

Close by thy fide ftill may I keep,
Howe'er life's various current flow;
With ftedfaft eye mark ev'ry step,

And follow thee where'er thou go.

5 Thou, Lord, the dreadful fight haft won;
Alone thou haft the wine-prefs trod :
In me thy ftrength'ning grace be shown,
O may I conquer through thy blood!
So when on Sion thou shalt ftand,

And all heav'n's hoft adore their king,
Shall I be found at thy right-hand,
And free fron pain thy glories fing.
