HYMN XXXI.

AH! whither fhould I go,

Burden'd, and fick, and faint?
To whom should I my trouble show
And pour out my complaint?
My Saviour bids me come,
Ah! why do I delay ?
He calls the weary finner home,
And yet from him I stay.

2 What is it keeps me back,

From which I cannot part?
Which will not let my Saviour take
Poffeffion of my heart?
Some cursed thing unknown
Muft furely lurk within:
Some idol, which I will not own,
Some fecret bofom-fin.

3 Jefu, the hin'drance show,

Which I have fear'd to fee;
Yet let me now confent to know
What keeps me out of thee.
Searcher of hearts, in mine
Thy trying pow'r display;
Into its darkeft corners thine,
And take the veil away.

4 I now believe, in thee

Compaffion reigns alone :

According to my faith, to me

O let it Lord, be done!

In me is all the bar,

Which thou would'ft fain remove

Remove it, and I fhall declare

That God is only love.

HYMN XXXII.

ATHER of Jefus Chrift the juft,
My friend and Advocate with thee,
Pity a foul that fain would truft

In him who liv'd and dy'd for me:
But only thou canft make him known,
And in my heart reveal thy fon.

2 If, drawn by thine alluring grace,
My want of living faith I feel,
Shew me in Chrift thy fmiling face,
What flesh and blood can ne'er reveal;"
Thy co-eternal Son display,

And call my darkness into day.

3 The gift unspeakable impart ;

Command the light of faith to fhine; To shine in my dark, drooping heart, And fill me with the life divine : Now bid the new creation he!

O God, let there be faith in me.

HYMN XXXIII.

JESUS my Hope
For me offer'd up,

Who with clamour purfu'd thee to Cavalry's top 3

The blood thou haft shed,

For me let it plead,

And declare thou haft dy'd in thy murderer's ftead.

2 Now, now let me know

Its virtue below;

Let it wash me, and I fhall be whiter than fnow, Let it hallow my heart,

And throughly convert,

And make, O Lord, in the world as thou art.

3 Each moment apply'd,
My weakness to hide,

Thy blood be upon me, and always abide :
My advocate prove

With the Father above,

And fpeak me at laft to the throne of thy love.

HYMN XXXIV.

COME, holy celestial Dove,

[ocr errors]

To. vifit a forrowful breaft,
My burthen of guilt to remove,
And bring me affurance and reft:
Thou only haft pow'r to relieve

A finner o'erwhelm'd with his load;
The fenfe of acceptance to give,

And fprinkle his heart with thy blood.
2 With me if of old thou hast strove,
And frangely withheld from my fin,
And try'd, by the lure of thy love,
My worthilefs affections to win :
The work of thy mercy revive;
Thy uttermoft mercy exert;
And kindly continue to ftrive,
And hold till I yield thee my heart.

3 Thy call if I ever have known,

And figh'd from myself to get free;
And groan'd the unspeakable groan,
And long'd to be happy in thees
Fulfil the imperfect defire,

Thy peace to my confcience reveal;
The fenfe of thy favour infpire, '
And give me my pardon to feel!

4 If when I had put thee to grief,
And madly to folly return'd,
Thy pity hath been my relief,
And lifted me up as 1 mourn'd:

Moft pitiful Spirit of grace,
Relieve me again, and restore,
My spirit in holiness raise,

To fall and to fuffer no more..

5 If now I lament after God,

1

And gafp for a drop of thy love,
If Jefus hath bought thee with blood,
For ine to receive from above:
Come, heavenly Comforter, come,
True witnefs of mercy divine,
And make me thy permanent home,
And feal me eternally thine!

HYMN XXXV.

STAY, thou infulted Spirit, stay,
Tho' I have done thee fuch despite,
Nor caft the finner quite away,

Nor take thine everlafting flight.

2 Though I have most unfaithful been
Of all whoe'er thy grace receiv'd,
Ten thousand times thy goodnefs feen,
Ten thousand times thy goodness griev'd.

3 Yet, O the chief of finners fpare,

In honour of my great High-Priest,
Nor in thy righteous anger fwear

T' exclude me from thy people's reft.
4 If yet thou canft my fins forgive,'
From now, O Lord, relieve my woes;
Into thy reft of love receive,

And blefs me with thy calm repofe.
5 From now my weary foul release,
Up-raife me with thy gracious hand,
And guide into thy perfect peace,
And bring me to the promis'd land.

HYMN XXXVI.

!

WEARY of wand'ring from my God,

And now made willing to return,

I hear, and bow me to the rod;

For thee, not without hope, I mourn; I have an advocate above,

A friend before the throne of Love.
2 O Jefus, full of truth and grace,
More full of grace than I of fin,
Yet once again I feek thy face,
Open thine arms and take me in,
And freely my backflidings heal,
And love the faithlefs finner ftill.

3 Thou know'ft the way to bring me back,
My fallen fpirit to restore;
O! for thy truth and mercy's fake,
Forgive, and bid me fin no more!
The rains of my foul repair,

And make my heart a houfe of pray'r. 4 Ah! give me, Lord, the tender heart, That trembles at th' approach of fin! A godly fear of fin impart :

Implant and root it deep within!
That I may dread thy gracious pow'r,
And never dare t' offend thee more.

HYMN XXXVII.

To the haven of thy breast,

O Son of Man, I fly,
Be my refuge and my reft,

For the ftorm is high!
Save me from the furious blast,
A covert from the tempest bel
Hide me, Jefus, till o'erpaft
The storm of fin I fee.
