This edition is beautifully printed in double columns and the plates, the greater portion of which are executed by W. Finden, are faithful copies from the originals. The historical Account of the Cathedral and Collegiate Churches of York, Rippon, Southwell, Beverley, Durham and Carlisle' published at the end of Maynard's edition, is omitted in this, as not being written by Dugdale. This first edition is considered the most the fire of London. Pepys says, correct. Many copies were destroyed in April 1667. Bought Dugdale's History of the Inns of Court, of which there was but a few saved out of the fire.' Nicolson recommends the book as a proper introduction to the history of the laws of the kingdom. Duhalde, who was never in China himself, has drawn his materials from a variety of sources, especially from the printed and manuscript account of the missionaries; but he has failed to exercise a sound judgment, and a scrupulous examination into the truth of many facts and opinions which he has admitted into his work.
